Education Is the Central Component in Forming

Last reviewed: November 27, 2002 ~4 min read

Education is the central component in forming a society that is affluent in every way. Educators make education an obtainable goal. The purpose if this discussion is to explore the personal philosophy of an educator. We will investigate; how the educator believes children learn, how his beliefs are demonstrated through hid teaching and classroom concepts, and how his teaching techniques are based on the philosophies are based on the research of various theorists.

The philosopher John Dewey said the following of education,

Education is the fundamental method of social progress and reform. All reforms which rest simply upon the law, or the threatening of certain penalties, or upon changes in mechanical or outward arrangements, are transitory and futile.... But through education society can formulate its own purposes, can organize its own means and resources, and thus shape itself with definiteness and economy in the direction in which it wishes to move.... Education thus conceived marks the most perfect and intimate union of science and art conceivable in human experience." (The John Dewey Society)

The educator believes strongly in a teacher-directed classroom. Within this teacher-directed classroom the educator expects students to be respectful, follow directions, pay attention, and to sit quietly while the teacher is presenting information to the class.

In addition the personal philosophy of this educator asserts that a student has to have a desire to learn. It is a two way street. Both the teacher and student must put forth effort.

The educator also believes that in a well managed classroom various methods of learning should be applied. Meaning that in an ideal classroom, the educator envisions students using all of their senses when learning because every student learns differently. Some students learn better visually, while others learn by doing. Consequently the educator asserts that students should be given or at least exposed to different manners of testing their knowledge. For example, if one student is great at art, allow that student to display their understanding of the concept through an art project; or if a person excels at writing, let them express what they learned through a poem. The educator also believes that everyone is different and learns differently and such differences should be accepted.

The educational philosopher Howard Gardner explains this type of learning best saying,

The multifarious nature of human intelligence [and] posits that humans have a family of seven intelligences that can be divided into three main groups: object-related intelligence, which includes mathematics and logic; object-free intelligence, including music and language; and personal intelligence, or the psychological perception we have of ourselves and others. ("Howard Gardner")

The educator also believes in student accountability -- not just teacher accountability. The educator asserts that students should have to pass proficiency tests at various levels in their school career and cannot move to the next grade until a certain minimum is mastered.

The educator also contends that parent involvement is very important in ensuring that the student succeeds in academia.
