Educational Background Personal Statement on My Educational Background and Doctoral Ambitions As I embark on my doctoral-level studies, I do so with a great appreciation for the education that I've had to this juncture. Indeed, my educational background has played a significant part in both guiding me to this point and preparing me for the challenges that surely lay ahead.
Over the course of my higher education, I have focused on expanding my knowledge, building my credentials and advancing my career in the fields of financial consultation, general accounting and business administration. Much of my grounding in this area of business stems from my undergraduate education. As a student at the University of ?, I earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting, which I intend ultimately to parlay into a career as a Certified Public Accountant.
During this course of study, I would gain greater interest in many of the evolving dimensions of the occupation. Among them, changing accounting principles and laws in the face of globalization; shifting values based on the need for greater ethical orientation; and producing financial reports which are clear, accurate and legally appropriate all would fill me with great interest. Certainly, as I worked toward my BBA in accounting, I gained a greater understanding of many of the technical and practical concerns driving the field.
However, as I moved on to my graduate studies, I did so with a desire to supplement the practical and technical skills of accounting with the more dynamic skills associated with business leadership. Therefore, my Masters studies would be dedicated toward the elucidation of core management principles. During this phase of my education, I would come to a greater understanding of many of the practices and philosophies that inform managerial behavior. I would also learn to differentiate between effective, ineffective or simply nonexistent managerial terms and conditions.
Over the course of my Masters studies, I would encounter an enormous spectrum of theories on organizational culture, organizational behavior, leadership best practices, career advancement principles and a host of other conceptual models that have significantly expanded my vocabulary and fluency in the field. More than that, these variant and even sometimes contradictory theories have provided me with a versed and open-minded perspective on how management should be pursued.
This phase in my education would provide me with many of the basic instruments necessary to ultimately become a theoretically grounded but flexible and pragmatic organizational leader. I would also find that there is great power in having both the technical and administrative capabilities that are implied by the combination of my BBA in accounting and my Masters in management.
One principle of tremendous importance that I learned in my management studies is that one with the technical know-how that I have gained in my undergraduate studies has a greater capacity to command respect, to engage in effective quality control and to relate to the needs of and expectations placed upon those over whom she presides. I have also had the opportunity to use these evolving skills in order to help.
