Beck and Ellis: Approaches to Therapy

Beck's approach to therapy, primarily known as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), is centered on the premise that psychological issues stem from negative and inaccurate beliefs. Beck theorizes that by identifying and challenging these erroneous beliefs and by teaching individuals to engage in more realistic and positive thinking, emotional distress and problematic behaviors can be significantly reduced. The approach is structured, goal-oriented, and focused on the present. It relies on the collaborative effort between therapist and client to identify harmful thoughts, assess their validity, and replace them with more accurate, beneficial ones. It also employs strategies like cognitive restructuring, behavioral experiments, and problem-solving techniques, with the focus being on the here and now, which enables clients to gain immediate tools for coping with current challenges. This can also make it especially effective for disorders like depression and anxiety (Jones-Smith, 2020).

On the other hand, Albert Ellis's approach, known as Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), shares similarities with CBT in its focus on the role of beliefs and perceptions in emotional distress. However, Ellis emphasizes the importance of accepting no matter the circumstances and focuses more explicitly on the irrational beliefs that lead to emotional and behavioral issues. REBT teaches individuals to dispute these irrational beliefs rigorously and to embrace more rational, flexible, and accepting attitudes towards life's challenges. While also present-oriented, REBT goes into a deeper level of philosophical change, shooting for a profound transformation in the individual's approach to life's adversities, thereby promoting lasting emotional well-being (Jones-Smith, 2020).

Both Beck's CBT and Ellis's REBT highlight the cognitive processes underlying psychological distress, but their approaches diverge in emphasis. Beck's CBT places a greater focus on the systematic identification and restructuring of specific negative thought patterns, whereas Ellis's REBT is more concerned with challenging and changing fundamental irrational beliefs and promoting unconditional self-acceptance.
