Drug companies must find ways to test their drugs prior to marketing them to the general public. It is interesting to look at a case concerning Eli Lilly from the perspective of utilitarianism and rights, as well as how managers should handle the case.

Viewpoint

Eli Lilly uses homeless, alcoholics to conduct its first phase of drug tests. Phase one must be conducted on healthy individuals, and Eli Lilly pays only $85 a day plus room and board to the test subjects, which is the lowest payment in the industry. These individuals have reported experiencing some dangerous, or painful side effects and some wonder if their alcoholic conditions may contribute to these effects.

In terms of a utilitarianism viewpoint, the industry is putting the good of many ahead of the good of few. Eli Lilly is trying to produce drugs that one day may help cure people throughout the world, while acknowledging the possibility the drugs may have harmful or deadly effects on the small number of test subjects. Some worry that the rights of these individuals are being overlooked, since they while they are 'voluntary' test subjects, they may not be thinking clearly of the consequences, but instead about payments.

Manager's Responsibilities

Management of Eli Lilly should investigate the test subject's activities after leaving the drug trials. Although the subjects are sober during the tests, if they revert back to drinking, the alcohol could have a negative effect on future trials. Also, the company should be encouraged to have a mixture of test subjects, including those who have never had problems with drugs or alcoholism. This will provide the company with more conclusive results from the trials.

Conclusion

The Eli Lilly case centered on the use of homeless, alcoholics for the first phase of new drug trials. The company has an utilitarianism viewpoint about conducting these tests, feeling the good of many outweighs the good of a few.

Eli Lilly entered into a joint venture agreement with Ranbaxy to produce and market pharmaceuticals on the Indian market in the early 1990s. Eight years later, the parties are re-evaluating the venture. Ranbaxy was considering selling its stake and Lilly was unhappy with aspects of the arrangement as and wanted to re-frame it going forward. Eli Lilly brought a number of assets to the deal, including its patents and its

Eli Lilly JV Eli Lilly and Company has maintained a joint venture in India with Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited. Each firm is a leading pharmaceutical company in their respective countries, and though each offer distinctly different cultures, their joint venture has worked well until just recently. India, like many countries, are changing the business marketplace through regulations and stringent standards that make doing business much more difficult, which affects Ranbaxy's cash flow

The question is whether to seek another partner or to buy out the company. One of the benefits of the JV has been the Ranbaxy distribution network. Using another Indian partner would mean a change in this network, and that could compromise earnings potential because as the largest pharmaceutical company in India Ranbaxy has the best distribution network. In addition, there are cultural considerations -- other Indian companies may

Alternatives 1. Direct-to-consumer (DTC) marketing is a key means of developing and maintaining brand awareness and brand loyalty. 2. Aggressive product placement via health care practitioners remains a major means of keeping Lilly's market share of antidepressants at an optimal level. Promoting Prozac and other Lilly products at psychiatric conventions, seminars, hospitals, and private practices ensures that the drug will be highly visible, its name virtually synonymous with the treatment of depression

Eli Lilly Facts Eli Lilly is searching for a successor to Prozac, which is marketed as an antidepressant. They began with five major candidates, but are presently focused on Cymbalta, which is more of a pain medication. However, it is believed that there is a link between pain and depression. The issue is that the link is not universally recognized, and this leaves the company in a position of trying to decide
