Background information
Prior to the year 2004, HSBC bank made use of the decentralized model to make decisions on which form of technology could be used at the various branches and subsidiaries. This meant that each of the hundreds of companies with the HSBC group had the potential of going with their own software deployment processes and tools, their own data centers, desktop standards, Windows domain and alerting and monitoring solutions Microsoft, 2007()
This approach presented several challenges for HSBC bank though it also had advantages. These challenges include that the different companies within the HSBC group could not be able to remotely update their software. The company had to have technicians at all of the companies and locations in order to handle maintenance and software updates. Even though certain companies within the group found a way to automate these deployments, there was also the disadvantage of there being duplicated efforts within the various companies. This also meant that the company spent a lot in terms of software costs. For example, Microsoft packaged their office product more than 100 times for HSBC at a total cost of roughly $200,000 Microsoft, 2007()
Also, the company was experiencing huge issues when they needed to move from one office to another. A simple move meant that the company had to pay for technicians to move each of the company's PCs individually and it also meant that the users of those computers had to lose hours or even days of productivity as a result of this move. This was unacceptable for the company since the company needed to be efficient at all times and they could not afford to lose any time Microsoft, 2007()
