Enterprise-Level Business System

Design and Modeling Specifics

Preliminary Design Model

Design Trade-Off Approach

Specify trade-offs among cost, schedule, and performance to be used in final design choice for hardware, software and human interface. Also include a discussion of the rationale for making these designs choices and any impact known to achieving the confirmed requirements as previously specified.

Oracle Systems

Pros:

Grid system allows the coordinated use of servers and storage.

One computer" approach for a whole organization will encourage greater unity in management structure of sharing data and solve problem of separate interfaces.

Also, Oracle's LINUX technology is the industry leader in website design and troubleshooting help would be critical in creating new interactive website.

Turn 64 small servers into a giant mainframe. It's fast, it's cheap...and it never breaks. When a server goes down, your system keeps on running. (Oracle, 2004)

Cons:

Could be intimidating for non-technical staff to be trained and use

Microsoft

Pros:

User friendly, industry leader.

Windows used by many other systems, so could increase customer and vendor base.

Cons:

Frequent target for virus in system could make it dangerous to create such an integrated database, even with password protection for staff.

Peoplesoft

Pros:

Extremely user friendly, company has separate component that will train non-technical staff in use of database.

Emphasizes personal data organization dependant on organizational needs.

Cons:

The 'customization' and boutique approach of Peoplesoft may be inappropriate for a company deciding to expand its industry use.

No overreaching conceptual design structure, more emphasis on troubleshooting and customization.

III. Detailed Design Process

A. Summarize the process need to complete the detailed design, especially for pending decisions about the final selection of hardware, software, emerging standards for sharing information, or anticipated changes in the human-computer interface that would affect decisions about a final design.

Grid system must integrate company, but include safety password protections

Must have spreadsheet as well as word-processing applications

Must contain full internet system to connect company employees and also with vendors

Standards for sharing information between departments and also with vendors set in a new handbook, developed in coordination with all staff, and emails monitored by quality control departments.

International organization of company -- if expanded over the year, may have to include increased security and password controls to minimize virus dangers.
