Epigenetics Pharmacogenetics Mental Health Discussion

Last reviewed: March 3, 2022 ~2 min read
Abstract

This doctoral-level discussion examines epigenetic mechanisms as critical interfaces between genetic predisposition and environmental factors in mental health disorders. The analysis explores how DNA methylation, histone modifications, and microRNAs serve as both risk markers and therapeutic targets. The research highlights the reversible nature of epigenetic modifications and their potential for psycho-pharmacological interventions in psychiatric treatment.

Schiele, Gottschalk, and Dormschke (2020) reviewed the existing knowledge to determine how changes in epigenetics can serve as markers to predict how psychotherapeutic interventions respond clinically, and how they serve as useful markers to potentially reverse and alter risk patterns associated with epigenetics. The authors based their review on a recent research that showed that epigenetic signatures act as risk factors for the development of a variety of mental disorders. The authors explain how genetic factors and environmental factors contribute to increased risk of mental illnesses. First, the authors found that genetic factors contribute to the process of pathogenesis in mental health disorders (Schiele et al, 2020). Essentially, chromosomal loci and genetic variants such as neuropeptides and neurotransmitter are associated with increased risk of mental disorders. On the other hand, environmental factors such as exposure to childhood adversities and psychosocial stressors also contribute to increased risk of mental health disorders. Despite the fact that both environmental and genetic factors contribute to mental health problems, it is important to note that they work together.

According to Schiele et al (2020), epigenetic mechanisms such as microRNAs, histone modifications, and DNA modifications act as an interface between environmental and genetic factors. Therefore, the said mechanisms can respond to environmental triggers and they can modulate gene functions. As a result, epigenetic mechanisms have been associated with a wide range of mental health disorders. Based on the review by Schiele et al (2020), it is worthwhile noting that epigenetic mechanisms or factors can be reversed. This is more so the case given that they are modifiable, temporary dynamic, respond to environmental triggers, and they can modulate gene function. Therefore, epigenetic mechanisms may have a therapeutic potential given that they can be reversed by psycho-pharmacological interventions.
