Ereth's Birthday All kids get upset when they think that their friends or family have not remembered their birthdays. Even when people are adults, they want to be surprised and have parties. Ereth, the stuck up porcupine, believes that Poppy and Rye have gone away and have forgotten his special day. He says, "I am not angry," but is anyway. Ereth decides that he should be getting a treat no matter what, since it is his birthday. And salt is one of the best treats there is.

However, the nearest salt is far away in the forest in a cabin owned by fur hunters, who have set out traps to capture the animals. Ereth finds the vixen Leaper the Fox in one of the traps. Before she dies, Leaper begs the Ereth to take care of her three babies. This day is not going as it was planned! Ereth begins taking care of the pups and protecting them from the traps and keeping them alive in the cold and snowy environment.

It turns out that he is with them much longer than expected. Meanwhile, Ereth is also being chased by Marty the Fisher. Even though I would rather read about people than animals, I did enjoy this book. There was a lot of action, and even though I felt it would end happy, I didn't know exactly what would be happening when. I also liked the way that Ereth changed in his personality -- becoming more caring and less selfish and concerned about his own needs.

It shows how we can all learn our lesson by taking care of other people who need our help. It is not good to only think about oneself.
