¶ … Plus
Carl, I am addressing this speech to you for even though you are gone, I want to thank you for giving me the greatest thing in my life and I want to promise -- with this bread in hand -- that I will look after your wife and daughter just as you would have wanted me to do. And I also want to thank you for showing me -- you more than anyone else -- that every day is a plus.
Bread appears in the bible in various places. Said Jesus to his apostles, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty."
Carl, you have been life-sustaining to me.
Firstly, you have given me the greatest gift that I could ever wish and pray for. How can I thank you. I tried so hard to propose to Kathryn. For months! after some failed attempts for trying to set up a few ways to propose, I finally did it at the end of the world on 12-21-12. I figured better late than never - we're all going to die anyway.... but, I didn't die. I won KATHYRN. And if not for you, Carl, I never would have won her.
Carl is the one I went too to ask if I could have his Daughters hand in marriage. Then I made him keep my intentions a secret until I would pop the question. Not an easy task for him to say the least: )
But he did it
Carl, even though Kathryn is your stepdaughter you treated her like your daughter. It was you she called 'Daddy', you who always looked out for her and who was intending to give her away. You who wanted someone good for her.
I will be that Carl and more... I will be there for Kathryn through the good and the bad. I will love her with all my heart as you did.
I will support her in all her ideas -- crazy or not - as you did.
I'll drive her crazy and half mad as you did. though I do tend to be an over achiever on this one: )
I'll shear her on and try to bring joy everyday into her life as you did.
I'll also tell myself that every day is a plus when I am with her. As you did.
I also swear to protect Marmel for you, Carl, so that Kathryn and I will always make her happy.
The Bible considers bread the sustenance of life.
Carl is like that. He was always a cheerful man... always so happy to see everyone and greeted everyone with a huge smile.
Any time you would ask him how he was, he would reply "Every day is a Plus"
