The Superiority of Electric Vehicles Over Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles

Introduction

Due to the popularity of Tesla and other electric car makers in recent years, the debate between electric vehicles (EVs) and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles has grown steadily louder. Some supporters of ICE cars dismiss the EVs as novelties that lack a tried-and-true track record. However, this paper focuses on showing the advantages of EVs over their ICE counterparts, by relying upon academic and popular sources for information that will support the argument.

Environmental Benefits

One of the most compelling and important arguments for EVs is their environmental friendliness. According to Jason Garbutt of HotCars, "EVs have zero tailpipe emissions" (Garbutt). This is a considerable advantage when one thinks about the detrimental impact of exhaust emissions from ICE vehicles on air quality and climate change. If EVs can eliminate that pollution, then that is a big point in their favor. Based upon what Garbutt says, the absence of tailpipe emissions in EVs directly contributes to a reduction in air pollution, and this can be taken as a majorly important factor in urban areas where vehicular emissions are a primary pollution source. If one looks at some of the most polluted cities in the world, one sees nothing but smog emanating from endless tailpipes as far as the eye can see. But if EVs are on the road instead, all of that smog is as good as gone.

Coming from an academic point of view are Albatayneh et al., who note that the environmental benefits of EVs are further supported by the research. Their study published in the journal Environmental and Climate Technologies shows that " powering the electric cars from renewable energy sources will significantly improve the overall system efficiency" (Albatayneh et al. 677). In other words, the reduction of greenhouse gases due to using clean energy, by which EVs can be powered, is another indication that they are superior to ICE cars when it comes to the global effort to eliminate climate change. As climate scientists argue that CO2 emissions are a leading cause of global warming, taking the CO2 out of the equation on the roads via EVs and clean energy suppliers means that the war against climate change starts with what people choose to drive. If people want to stop climate change, the research indicates that they can do this with EVs and clean energy.

Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Integration

EVs are not only environmentally friendly but also more energy-efficient. Garbutt of HotCars notes, "running costs per mile, EVs are better" (Garbutt). The way this is explained is that ICE cars need gas, and gas is expensive. EVs just need a battery boost at a charging station, and the cost to charge the battery is far less than it is to fill a gas tank. When the ranges are comparable between EVs and ICE cars, it is no contest: the EV is more efficient and less of a burden on the wallet. In short, the increased efficiency means that EVs use less energy to travel the same distance as ICE vehicles, and this contributes to cost savings and reduced energy consumption.

Moreover, EVs offer the potential for integration with renewable energy sources. This is actually a key ingredient in the EV movement: it needs to be supported by clean energy, as Albatayneh et al. point out: “While the EV supplied by coal-fired and diesel power plants have approximately the same WTW [well-to-wheel] efficiency ranging between 13 % to 27 % and 12 % to 25 %, respectively. If renewable energy is used, the losses will drop significantly and the overall efficiency for electric cars will be around 40–70 % depending on the source and the location of the renewable energy systems” (669). The integration of charging stations with clean energy is really all it takes to make EVs more efficient than ICE cars all the way down the line. It represents a step towards a more sustainable and renewable energy-driven future, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, too.

Reduced Maintenance and Operating Costs

Another advantage of EVs is their lower maintenance and operating costs. EVs have fewer moving parts than ICE vehicles, which translates into less wear and tear and, consequently, lower maintenance costs. Garbutt points out that electric cars cost less over time than gas-powered cars, and this is something that is supported by the math. This cost-effectiveness is a significant factor for consumers considering the total cost of ownership. Anyone with an EV can crunch the numbers to see that when all is said and done, the EV is going to hurt the wallet less. Garbutt explains that the evidence corroborates this, noting that electric vehicles have lower operating costs for those who stick with them and buy quality EVs. This aspect is particularly appealing in the long term, as it offsets the initial higher purchase price of EVs.

The Cool Factor

EVs also have style and innovative tech that brings with them a cool factor that appeals to many tech-savvy consumers. For example, EVs often feature more futuristic and innovative designs than traditional ICE vehicles. Brands like Tesla have set a precedent with sleek, minimalist interiors and exteriors that have become synonymous with modern luxury and coolness. The absence of a traditional engine allows for more creative design freedom, and this results in unique, eye-catching vehicles.

The performance of EVs is also a big part of their cool factor. Electric motors can deliver instant torque, and anyone who has ever ridden in one can attest to that. They are powerful and give instant acceleration that ICE vehicles simply cannot beat. This instant acceleration makes EVs fun to drive and gives them an edge in terms of performance, as they can outpace muscle cars like Dodge’s Charge and Challenger line-ups and other high-performance ICE cars in acceleration tests.

Plus, cool features like advanced infotainment systems, autonomous driving capabilities, and over-the-air updates make EVs more appealing to a tech-savvy generation. These features give EVs a unique driving experience and make drivers feel like they are at the forefront of the next generation of automotive innovation. The overall sense is that EVs are more than just cars – they are fancy tech gadgets on wheels that will inevitably usher the world into a cleaner era with a cooler, more futuristic vibe. That is why Elon Musk continues to be the standard bearer of the EV revolution with his new CyberTruck, which will be launching soon. It is an emblem of everything hip and trendy in the tech and EV world, and Musk is constantly bringing new ideas to the engineering room so that tech-loving consumers can fall in love all over again (Metz). Break-proof glass, stainless steel plating, and armored hub caps are just a few of the “wow” factors that Musk wants his design to have for the EV truck.
