Exemplification
When the first horseless carriage came about, it was viewed as a novelty; a means to get around much faster but the dangers of the invention were always known. Nowadays, car accidents are very frequent things, some fatal but most are the "fender benders" where people are not very much injured. Because automobiles can be so dangerous, legislation has been passed over the last century to make people who are behind the wheel legally responsible. Besides taking a written exam about driving laws, people who want to drive also have to take a hands-on driver's test so that the Department of Motor Vehicles can judge how they drive. However, once the license has been acquired, what often happens is that people engage in activities which are often illegal and quite dangerous. The danger of cellular telephones while driving has led to legislation banning the use. There are also concerns about distracted driving and a lack of paying attention to the road while driving.
It is now illegal to use a hand-held cellular phone while driving. Researchers were able to prove that the use of cell phones caused severe driver distraction. When a cell phone is not at hand's reach, a driver would move around within the car to access the ringing device either in a purse or pocket. Instead of pulling over, the driver would often swerve about in the attempt to answer the phone without stopping their journey. Talking on the phone would force the speaker to take one hand off of the wheel in order to communicate. Now, if a person wants to speak on the phone while they are driving, they have the option of using a headset microphone, called a blue tooth. This allows the driver to answer and speak with both hands on the wheel and without having to search out the electronic device. Drivers who ignore the law are pulled over by police and cited. More than one violation of the law could result in larger fees or even a suspension of the driver's license. Many people that do obey the law against talking on the phone, do not stop using their phones while driving. Instead, they text; a process researchers believe is even more dangerous because it diverts the eye and hands away from the road and wheel.
There are other distractions to drivers besides the use of cellular phones. There is also the distraction of entertainment. Modern cars are fitted out with all manner of electronic doodads from MP3 players to DVD players. Any of these things can be distracting to the driver in that they detract from the need to focus on the task at hand. There are a plethora of accident reports which have distracted driving as the cause of the collision. Students who are on their way to an exam have been caught trying to read while driving. Some people who find driving on their daily commute to be rather dull and who feel that they have done the drive so many times that they do not expect any incidents believe that they do not have to direct all their attentions towards driving and skim through a magazine or reach to put in another CD. Another example is the fast food industry. The modern person is very busy and instead of stopping in some place to eat lunch or dinner, the person on a thirty minute lunch break goes through the drive-thru at the local fast feeder. Picking up food fast and the need to eat fast leads to consumption of food in the car, which is another easy form of distraction.
