Overview of the Trends

The fashion trends for spring 2015, especially the most coveted trends, were heavily influenced by nostalgia for the 1970s. According to insiders in the fashion industry, this influence was expected to linger in this year's fall-winter trends.[footnoteRef:3] Some of the characteristics of fashion trends in fall 2015 included high waists, long layers, long skirts, and extended tunics that were paired over slim dresses. In addition, the slim dresses with extended tunics were shaped like fluid pants and usually with a small flare. Lizzy Bowring, WGSN fashion forecaster of major trends emerging from global runways, stated that the fall trends of 2015 were slimmer silhouette and not a granola look. In her predictions, Bowring suggested that the overriding trend in fall 2015 would be driven by masculinity and characterized by components that represented the tailor in a smoother, slimmer silhouette. Apart from the tailored look, fall trends of 2015 were expected to be characterized by emphasis on the waist with a fitting jacket and relaxed pant combo, patent belts in the waist, and flaps on lower pockets. The fashion trends for fall 2015 not only has these characteristics but is also embedded in versatile, androgynous colors that can be worn to depict natural sophistication across men's and women's clothing. Experts in the fashion industry have argued that the fashion trends for fall 2015 represented the first time this industry experienced a truly unisex color palette. These characteristics have particularly been demonstrated by the industry's leading designers including Dior, which has relatively dictated or largely influenced the current trends. Generally, these characteristics represent the various designs and emerging trends that have characterized this season. As a result, some fashion industry insiders have predicted the possibility of historical romanticism being displayed by these trends.

Details of the Trends

Similar to other seasons, there have been several trends in the fashion industry in fall 2015 that are based on new elements and focus of designers. Some of the major trends that have characterized fall 2015 include high waisted, carwash pleats, desert colors, statement coat, furry feet or fur on shoes, skinny scarf, grey suits, flounce hem, and big cuffs among others. Notably, these trends for fall 2015 have been characterized by elements presented and discussed in the overview section of this article.

This implies that fall trends for 2015 have provided a new design in the production of shoes and sandals, particularly because of weather conditions. The difference in shoes has specifically been welcomed by women who have been used to the expectation of uncomfortable shoes. The inclusion of fur in shoes as a fall trend for 2015 was not only geared towards presenting a new design but also focused on addressing the usual expectation of uncomfortable shoes. Furry boots or fur on shoes is a trend that provides comfort while adding to a stylish look during this season.
The emergence of furry feet was influenced by the fact that the fashion industry was looking for new means for tuftening up the toes, which resulted in design of footwear that may require regular combing. During the Fashion Week, furry feet or fur on shoes emerged as one of the most favorite parts for many people since it was an eccentric trend that was characterized by a sense of humor and contributed to prevalence of the furry message.

Desert Colors

The second major fashion trend for fall 2015 is desert colors given the evolving color landscape in the fashion industry in the recent past. Actually, fall 2015 has been characterized by exhibition of an umbrella of color landscape that interlaces earthy neutrals with a series of bold color statements. The emergence of desert colors for fall 2015 fashion has been influenced by the display of a color landscape that is characterized by models that reflect fantasy, hope, natural things, and fun. Moreover, desert colors in fashion trends this fall can be traced back to 2007 when desert-inspired fashion trends started to characterize runways.

Desert colors can be described as one of the major distinctive features of the fashion industry in this season. The use of these colors in fashion design for this season has largely been motivated by the significant shift towards a growing color palette that is not dependent on color differences usually allocated to each gender. Designers and industry insiders incorporated desert colors in their new designs for fall 2015 based on their attempts to identify sartorial fabrics and styling. These measures were geared towards identifying definitive features of masculine and feminine understanding of color combinations and hues. This has led to the realization of the significance of neutrals, which has been a major factor in the use of desert colors in designs of fall trends for 2015 in the fashion industry.

Androgyny

Androgyny is menswear that is becoming more important, especially this fall to an extent that is here to stay. During this fall, androgyny is considered bigger than ever given the prevalent acceptance of blurring gender lines in the fashion industry despite the various concerns regarding gender fluidity and equality. The emergence of androgyny as a major trend for fall 2015 is a reflection of the increased positive strides that have been made in the society towards embracing distinctive gender lines in the fashion industry. Notably, androgyny is not a passing trend since it has undergone several cycles in the fashion industry. Actually, industry insiders argue that androgyny is a concept that has evolved because it keeps popping up from time to time. In the past few years, high-end designers have not only embraced this concept but also carried it, which has contributed to seemingly mainstream sales in today's fashion industry.[footnoteRef:4] [4: Nic Screws, "Androgyny is in: Men's Fashion is Headed for a Gender-bending Moment," National Post, accessed September 27, 2015, http://news.nationalpost.com/life/style/androgyny-is-in-mens-fashion-is-headed-for-a-gender-bending-moment]

The emergence of androgyny as a key menswear trend for fall 2015 is an indicator of how this trend has made significant strides in the past few years. Androgyny in fall 2015 has also been an indicator of how designers have continued to work towards convergence of trends for both genders. In essence, designers and consumers have demonstrated their willingness to experiment while shifting from the belief that daring and stylish looks were traditionally the domain of women to embracing and developing an exciting time for men's fashion. Menswear is becoming more important, particularly this fall, because men are no longer afraid to enjoy fashion despite the huge differences in the way men and women consume fashion. Men are not only increasingly interested in new designs, which are growing in significance, but they are also buying more intuitively like women. These factors have played a crucial role in the development of androgyny and its emergence as a key trend for fall 2015.
