My Fantasy Dinner
The notion of dining with anyone you could possibly choose is not a new one, the fantasy has been around for decades, if not centuries. Nevertheless, it's a wonderful way to encourage your imagination. For me, envisioning sitting down with these four individuals would be a dream come true for me, because I admire all of them, and I think the conversation that would flow around the dinner table would be fascinating, and would certainly become fodder for a book, a play, or a MySpace video, at the least!
First, let me set the stage for this fantasy event. The room would be warm, intimate, and extremely comfortable. I would want my guests to feel at ease, to allow the conversation to flow, and I would want them to feel immediately secure in their environment. A large, opulent dining hall, lush with candles, servers, and extra guests is out, but an intimate and yet casual environment is perfect, something on the manner of an upscale hunting lodge or men's club would be perfect, I think. Dinner would be filled with the best foods and finest wines, but they would all play a secondary role to the company, of course. This dinner, of course, is not about the courses, cuisine, and culinary prowess, but about the conversations and the comfort of the guests.
My guests would include William Jefferson Clinton, because he is a former President, and I believe his presence would be important, in line with the other guests. In addition, he is a fine speaker, and his opinions would be interesting to combine with the other guests. Along with Clinton, I would invite Eleanor Roosevelt, because she became known as a premier political leader after her husband's death, and she helped draft the Global Bill of Rights for the United Nations after World War II. I would want her perspectives on the world today, and what she would to help solve the world's problems. I would ask Theodore Roosevelt to attend, as he would add a note of frontiersman to the event, and I would especially like to hear his take on the world today, since he was known as a "maverick" of his time. I would also want to know his feelings on global warming, since he was such a champion of the National Parks, the West, and the outdoors. Finally, I would invite Thomas Jefferson. I believe an engagement between these four would be extremely valuable for our modern predicaments, and I would especially like to hear his thoughts on the Founding Fathers, and what they really had in mind when they framed the Constitution and our government. I believe these four individuals represent several stages in our society, and getting them together would turn out to be a fascinating and extremely enlightening fantasy dinner.
