¶ … Fellows hired teach 'high' schools located low-income communities. Why teach specifically a high-school New York City? Why effective teacher a high-school?
There are several issues that must be taken into consideration when deciding to work in high-need schools. It is important to thoroughly weight both the advantages and the disadvantages associated to teaching in this type of schools. I think that if this is done for the right reasons, this activity can have significant benefits for teachers, for their pupils, and for the community in case.
The most important advantage of teaching in high-need schools is that this represents a real challenge for those that want to make this a successful career. I think this is a great opportunity for young teachers to refine their skills and to gain important experience on working with different types of students. It is my strong belief that if teachers are successful in such a school, they can practice this job successfully in better positioned schools also. Working in this environment can also help teachers develop a series of skills and abilities that can help them improve their professional activity.
Teaching in high-need schools can be considered a good option for some of the teachers because of other benefits associated with this. For example, some choose this option because of the proximity of the school to their house, which helps them reduce transportation costs and to save important amounts of time. Therefore, this should be considered a great opportunity by teachers that have a vocation in this direction and that are honestly committed to continuously improving their work in class and the impact they have on their students. I think that by teaching in a high-need school I could really contribute to making a difference in such an environment. I also think that my dedication towards this profession and towards the well-being of students in these schools can help me become a successful teacher.
However, I must also refer to the disadvantages associated to teaching in high-need schools. Some of these refer to the learning difficulties of some of the children in these schools. In addition to this, these children usually have social, emotional, and physical problems. This requires that teachers work and collaborate with a series of professionals in different fields in order to help children with these problems. I think this help the teacher expand his knowledge in different areas and this can work in his advantage in different situation during his career.
