Final Approach by John J. Nance

¶ … John J. Nance presents to his audience a technical detective story in the form of his novel Final Approach. The book is primarily based upon how and why the North American Airline, Flight 255 crashed. On a rainy night, when the whether conditions seems to be awful, the North American Airline 255 flying to Kansas, descends from the turbulent sky and mysteriously crashes.

Its crew had previously informed the passengers of the airline that the skies were safe: they obviously lied The incident happens to be one of the most shocking aviation catastrophes of the decade. A large number of passengers and crewmembers die during the horrifying accident. The public and the technical staff of the airline are left in awe, since according to them it should have never happened in the first place.

Joe Wallingford, the main character of the novel, is then assigned by the National Investigation Safety Board, the duty to investigate and discover the reasons for the Flight 255 to crash (John J. Nance, Final Approach).

Joe is faced with a number of questions such as, was the disaster a result of human or technical error and did the outer electronic interference, such as that from the secret SDI radar disrupt the flight controls? After a tiresome and tedious journey, Joe investigates the scenes usually closed to the flying public and pursues to detect what the destruction is telling him and what certain people are trying to hide from him.

Later in the novel, Joe receives a mysterious call from an anonymous caller who informs him that the airline crash was due to sabotage involving a racist right wing politician. The news switches the entire media into frenzy and at this point Joe realizes that he is fighting against time. After further investigation, Joe realizes the hidden but disastrous effects of the complex conspiracy airline cost cutting.

His search furthers opens to him the strained relations between the management and the pilots and how the Federal Aviation Bureaucratic played with the lives of hundreds of people on board the North American Airline, 255. The further Joe digs into the matter, the further he is brought close to reality. His investigation not only results in the real reasons of the crash but to the prospect of professional suicide. Even though the inquiry proves to be difficult and dangerous for Joe, he does not abdicate the investigation.

He is a professional who takes his work seriously. What keeps him going is the old fashioned integrity. Later, in the novel John J. Nance presents to his audience a character named, Dr. Susan Kelly, an effulgent attractive superior in the National Transportation Safety Board (John J. Nance, Final Approach). Another reason, which leads Joe to continue his search, is the prospect of a non-professional encounter with the dazzling Susan Kelly. It takes Joe a number of careful analyses to get close to the actual reason of the calamity.
