Value of Team Work
The cornerstone of fire service environment is usually teamwork which is evident in each and every aspect of the fire service profession from training exercises to the most involved incidences in the course of heir operations. The fire service tradition is normally rich in tradition which is the way through which the fire service teams evolve around. The method of organization and functioning in fire service environment has various divisions whereby the firefighters are divided into various companies; ladder, engine, rescue, haz mat and so on which work in rotating shifts. The engine company is usually the basic unit for the fire service whose main duty is putting out the fire. The first engine is supposed to get a hose line in place and ensure that they put water on the fire immediately. Ventilation is among the most important tasks that has to be accomplished by the crew since it allows the firefighters to impact a building that is on fire in a positive way. Once the firefighting team is assembled the operation ahs to be well controlled and coordinated by a team leader (Mills,2004).
The work groups that are formed normally contain individuals that have a range of experience abilities and levels. Perhaps the greatest challenge in fire service is the organization of a group of firefighters that are from different backgrounds, holding different beliefs and level of experience to come together and perform as a team in most cases under extreme conditions. The fire service and every of its units all perform basic functions on the fire ground such as advancement into the scene and extinguishing...
The fire service departments normally use diverse tactics and standard operating procedures that are dependent on a common denominator which is teamwork.
Effective teams normally offer firefighters many benefits such as an increased efficiency in their operations, better use of the existing diverse talents, the knowledge and experience pool brought together by different team members in order to address problems in a better way and an increased personnel commitment to the fire service organization. The personnel are the greatest resource for the fire service organization hence the use of this resource in a wise way is key when it comes to the realization of the benefits listed above. When fire fighters are part of a team that appreciates their individual talent, they are committed to the team and in turn the entire fire service organization is fostered. Allowing members of the team to function in the specific areas they are good at and at the same time empowering them to overcome their challenges results to team members that are more zealous since they will be more intimate when it comes to the problem solving aspect of the team (Mills,2004).
Teamwork is therefore quite beneficial and plays a major part of any of the fire service groundwork operations due to various reasons. This is because each of the tasks during a fire ground operation is dependent on someone else completion of another task or tasks that are all related. A perfect example is that if a fire fighter venter the area under fire before a hose line has been put in place then the flames might get intense and…
Emergency management is also a vital part to the planning for a disaster. Training will have to be conducted at periodic intervals to maintain the preparedness of the emergency response team and to evaluate the condition and the operational difficulties if any that may arise due to the equipment being used. The procedures will have to be critiqued and constantly evaluated to determine if a better, safer or more efficient
