Fitness for Women;

Differences between White and Black Women

This was a fairly intriguing article that enlightened the concepts of both perceptual and actual differences in the exercise habits, activity levels and overall behavioral tendencies of young black and white girls from urban and rural areas. There were extensive insights into the reasons that supported the types of characteristics which led to the results within the findings. Much of the findings proved to be somewhat contradictive of what would typically be conceived in assumption of the environmental aspects surrounding the girls in the study. Overall, the final conclusions in the article prove a definite separating distinction between white and black girls.

There are specific strengths throughout the article that support the final conclusions reached, such as the concise methods by which the girls are surveyed. The intricacy in regard to the thoroughness used to research the aspects that would derive the conclusions is methodically meticulous and overtly substantiates the determination for which groups fall into which categories. There are however, significant weaknesses within the context of the research that was done.

Subjects included 1,668 eighth-grade girls from 31 middle schools: 933 from urban settings, and 735 from rural settings. Forty-six percent of urban girls and 59% of rural girls were Black. One-way and two-way ANOVAs with school as a covariate were used to analyze the data" (JSH, 2002).

The detail of this study, though indefinite to conclude a determination, it does only include a small portion of participants. The overall credibility of a research study is comparatively only by the amount of subjects it utilizes to draw its conclusions. The amount for this study is not very significant, and thus could derive a further conclusion that it merely covers a small populous as compared to a grander scaled survey of its like.
