Career Development Plan: Human Resources

Career goals and objectives

Today's global economic landscape is changing at a rapid pace as the world turns to business to find solutions to some of the world's most perplexing problems. One of these challenges is the quest for sustainable energy and the field that is offering solutions is that of green technologies.

My goal is to be a part of the solution. My five-year plan is to apply the knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm to seek and apply a combination of innovative thinking and sound business practices as a human resource manager at a major U.S. Green-tech business. Additionally, I have a particular interest in becoming an employee relations specialist in the wind energy industry.

The job satisfaction attributes I will seek will be to find employment in the state of California, a forty hour week, an entry level salary of $50,000, and a basic benefit package with a five-year goal of becoming a third level employee relations specialist earning $75,000 annually.

Career Growth

The career outlook for sustainability jobs looks strong. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that Wind-energy technologies increased by 39% in the United States in the past five years, and is expected to endure into the next decade. As technologies improve to meet consumer demand, so will the job market. Human resource specialist will be vital in supporting these growing wind power companies. (Hamilton, & Liming, 2010)

Steps to Toward Career Goals:

Step One: Complete my degree: I am less than 6 months away from completing a MBA in Sustainable Enterprise at Dominican University of California

Step Two: I am registered to begin the internship program at Dominican University, for the spring semester, with a renewable energy company.

Step Three: I have met, and will meet again, with a career counselor who is helping me to write a professional resume, compile a list of potential employers in California, and submit applications to prepare for employment upon graduation. In addition, the counselor has helped me to begin networking in my desired field.

Skills and Education:

My primary skill or asset in obtaining my desired career will be the completion of my degree. This degree will be obtained from a university with an excellent reputation who has shown great innovation and foresight in developing the renewable energies program.

In addition, my average grade point average for the past four years has been above a 3.7 which shows my ability to think critically and solve problems.

On a more personal level, I have a long standing record of service in the community. I have volunteered for the last three years at a local nursing home. This experience has helped me to grow as a person, to value human life, and increased my enthusiasm for the field of renewable energies not only because this field will be good for the environment, but ultimately because it is good for people.

Potential Barriers:

The greatest barrier I face is inexperience. In today's job market, especially in California, the competition is fierce. My inexperience will make it more difficult to be noticed. To overcome this barrier, I have begun attending public meetings related to renewable energies at the local level, and have traveled to Sacramento, the state capital, to begin networking in this field.
