¶ … Florida Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan is a plan used to assist the federal government in the repatriation of United States citizens through a process of reception, temporary care, onward transportation to final destination, and follow-up assistance for U.S. Non-Combatant evacuees to the State of Florida in an emergency. (Florida Division of Emergency Management [FDEM], 2004) From a political and public policy standpoint the purpose of this document is a written guide of what to do in a given situation that is viewed as an emergency, therefore insuring that proper protocol is followed and no important aspects are missed. One example of a situation where an emergency plan such as this pone was necessary is during hurricane Katrina.
In 2005 Hurricane Katrina brought an amount of devastation that could not had been foretold, and due to emergency plan being in place the effort was not as chaotic as it could have been if there were no guidelines to go by. The plan includes checklists that aid people i.e. F.E.M.A (Federal Emergency Management Agency) to determine the severity of each case as well as what steps need to be taken on an individual basis. Political, management plans are important for several reasons, firstly, the residents in any given county or state, want legislation in place in case of an emergency, they will vote in or keep current political figures that make sure these needs are being met. Therefore, as long as plans like the Florida Emergency plan exist, there is a certain amount of job security for local political figures. On the other hand, it affects public policy directly, by giving rules and regulations in times of emergency, a guide to determine when, what, how and where. This allows the affected individual to be handled appropriately, and the official aiding them the proper guidelines to follow in the given situation, so no one gets lost in protocol or paper work, everyone knows their job and what is expected of them at all times.
