Follower Outcomes of Leadership Behaviors
The founder and current executive chairman of University of Phoenix is John Sperling. He is a very respectable, influential, and powerful leader. John Sperling founded the University of Phoenix by offering classes in his garage. Today University of Phoenix is one of the largest private universities in the country. A great leader is one that is capable of leading the company effectively and increasing follower outcomes. In this paper I will discuss John Sperling and his leadership behaviors and how they influence follower outcomes. I will also discuss some of the follower outcomes that originate from good leaderships.
John Sperling utilized his skills, his knowledge, his business savvy and his strong leadership skills to create a very successful and profitable organization. "University of Phoenix founder and Chairman John Sperling rewrote the rules for success in the postsecondary marketplace" (External Influencers, 1998). Mr. Sperling is loved by many and yet criticized by many as well. He is respected in his organization as a brilliant, innovative, strong and powerful leader. He is known as directive leaders, one that is able to generate a high level of follower outcomes. The employees of University of Phoenix that works for John Sperling are motivated by his leadership techniques and abilities. He leads the company and followers with integrity and passion, passion for the cause (Adamson, 2010). Sperling is a successful leader because he believes in his company, he believes he is providing a service that would help to better the lives of others and he is passionate about helping
Sperling leads his company in a very directive manner. Each employee has a job description, a deadline for accomplishing their task and monthly goals that are broken up into weekly and daily goals. His subordinates know exactly what is expected of them and understand the standards that are expected. John Sperling does not believe in managing people, he believes in leading people. He believes in providing them with the tools, training and empowerment to accomplish their jobs. He has a high percentage of follower outcome, people are motivated by his leadership skills. Employees within the organization believe in his mission, and understand their purpose in the organization. Employees in the company are happy, and most of them love what they do, they believe they are helping others.
