This paper is a sample football practice. There are 45 varsity players, 45 JVs, two fields, six coaches and mandatory water breaks. The drills are divided evenly between offense, defense and special teams. The schedule outlines the types of drills that will be done, what coach goes where on the field, and how many players that coach is responsible for.
Football Practice
For the Tuesday practices, the objective it to build fundamental skills for the teams. The practices on the other days of the week will focus on a number of the tactic issues that will be implemented for the next game. Tuesday is for building the critical skills. Particular attention within this framework will be paid to remedying deficiencies in the prior games. So for example while this example practice will be split evenly between offense, defense, and special teams, an actual practice might look quite a bit different. If tackling was a problem last week, then extra attention will be paid to tackling in this practice.
The basic structure of the practice is that JV will have one field and varsity another. Only at the end, where there are scrimmages, will supplemental instruction be provided by one coach to six residual players, and they will come from both the varisity and JV ranks. In general, however, the JV players will be working on their skills and will not compete in drills with the older, larger students. The size difference in particular is a concern, as well as the skill difference. We do not want to see JV players get injured simply because they were practicing drills with older boys.
The practice will therefore be structure in this case evenly between fundamental skills for offense, defense and special teams. The offensive skills include short yardage running plays, blocking, and routes for quarterbacks and receivers. The tight end will likely focus on blocking drills, but may be asked to participate in a receiving drill if the coaches feel it would be beneficial to the functioning of the offense.
On the defensive side of the ball, tackling is a fundamental skill that will receive significant focus. Bad tackling undermines good reads. That said, there will be some specific worth with the linemen in drills, while linebackers and the secondary will also focus on their respective skill sets. For special teams, all types of special teams will be the focus in large scale drills.
The final component of the practice is the scrimmage, where the players can work on their skills in a real time situation. Both JV and varsity will participate in their own scrimmages. The scrimmages will be 7-on-7, so three linemen, RB, QB and 2 WR on offense, 3 linemen, 2LB and 2 secondary for the defensive side.
The water breaks are spread throughout the practice, and there is attention paid to improving fitness levels, because tired teams lose in the fourth quarter. We want our team to be a leader in fitness and fundamentals before becoming leaders in high-end offensive systems.
