¶ … Mice and Men

Discuss loneliness in novel

Both George and Lennie are profoundly lonely people. George is so lonely he seeks out companionship with Lennie, even though Lennie cannot really provide George with an intellectually fulfilling relationship. Lennie is lonely so he seeks out the company of animals, even though he accidentally hurts them. And Curley's wife is desperate and lonely, as manifested in her flirting with the ranch hands.

Discuss symbiotic relationship between George and Lennie

Lennie is too vulnerable to be alone and has no ability to self-monitor his desire to touch soft things -- women and rabbits alike. However, by protecting Lennie, George gains a sense of self-esteem, despite his lowly role as an itinerant ranch hand.

Q3. Discuss theme of commitment in the novel

Although George and Lennie are wandering laborers, they have a genuine commitment to one another. Curley and his wife do not, even though Curley is the son of a man who owns the type of ranch George and Lennie dream of owning.

Q4. Discuss theme of "An American Dream"

George and Lennie dream of a place of their own -- of owning something rather than merely being hired workers.

Q5. What is love like in the novel? Discuss lack of what we would consider normal, loving relationships

The closest to a loving relationship is the friendship between George and Lennie. Curley and his wife are constantly at odds. Lennie likes to physically touch things, but has no emotional connection with them. Love can kill -- Lennie kills the animals he loves, the desire of Curley's wife leads to her death at Lennie's hands.

Q6. Discuss what George's life would be like without Lennie, and Lennie's like without George.

Lennie would likely be institutionalized because of his large size and his lack of social inhibitions or self-monitoring. George would be a drifter, without a clear sense of purpose in life other than his dream of owning a ranch some day. Lennie gives him a sense of identity.

Q7. Discuss theme of morality

Steinbeck's novel constantly questions conventional morality by showing how society misinterprets Lennie's actions as immoral, although they are not intended that way. Lennie has no malice; he is a child trapped in a man's body.

Q8. Discuss George's motives for killing Lennie

George kills Lennie to give him a death with dignity, knowing that otherwise Lennie will be killed by a lynch mob.

Q9. Describe book as a response to the Great Depression of the 1930s
