French Geography Help to Broaden and Deepening

¶ … French geography help to broaden and deepening your knowledge of France? Does learning geography help to change preconceived notions or stereotypes about France and the French people? What in your view is a good way to learn about a country's geography? Have you ever stopped to wonder if your geographic origins have affected how you think about yourself? For example, I have always noticed that I sound a lot like the people who grew up in my town, but if I go 100 mles south or north, I no longer quite fit in.

If I go further than that, I sometimes sound foreign to people aoround me. In 1977, I went from my home town of York to Portsmouth on the south coast of England. I moved about 300 miles from the north to the south. During try-outs for the volleyball team, one of the coaches, hearing me speak, asked me if I was really English or if I was from another country.

As my interest in languages and cultures continued to grow, I noticed that, within cultures that seemed from the outside to be quite unified, there were many inward divisions. City folk were not quite the same as people who lived in small towns or in the country. In France, people who lived in smaller towns seemed more attached to their local culture, whereas people who lived in big cities often shared urban problems encountered in most urban environments.

Someone livingin Paris might have more in common with a New Yorker than an inhabitant of a small village in the South of France.

Have you ever noticed these types of differences, where people who lived in large cities affront similar problems of say crime and security, whereas people in smaller towns faced other issues that had more to do with a local smaller identity? Do you think it makes any difference whether you live in a big city or a small town? Do we all inevitably beong to the same country, or do local issues sometimes outweigh national or international issues? Don't reply to the above. Just reply to the below 3.

As I watched all the clips and video's, I realized that geography has alot to do with culture (and not that just the French are from France). It was very interesting to me that the different regions had different characteristics which created a different feel for each region and the culture of each was diffferent.

While I have always wanted to go to France and visit Paris, I now really like the idea of possiblly visiting Strasbourg or Nice and.
