¶ … Monty at Fisher

On October 31, the national tour of the musical "The Full Monty" was performed at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Fisher Auditorium. The musical is the story of six unemployed buddies who come up with a "foolproof" plan to make money and conquer their fears. The musical was a British film that was made into a musical.

First of all, this musical is funny. It is billed as a musical comedy, but sometimes that is not really the case. This musical is funny, and the lyrics to the songs are witty and sometimes caustic. "Michael Jordan's Ball" was especially funny, and the way it was written, in a bouncy, very masculine tone, made it really seem like the court action of a basketball game. "Big Black Man" had a jazz feel, and the brass and drums kept it light and yet very modern at the same time. The music was all easy to listen to, and the performances by the actors were funny and moving at the same time. They made the audience care about them, so that by the end of the show, you really wanted them to succeed, and you knew how hard it would be for them. I also enjoyed the ballads of the show, especially "Breeze off the River" and "You Walk With Me." These two songs helped make the characters more real, and showed that they were more than just dumb, out of work guys, they had feelings, needs, and wants, and they were desperate enough to do just about anything to make their dreams come true. These songs were a nice opposite to the jazzier and more raucous numbers, like "Michael Jordan's Ball," and they made the show more interesting and thought-provoking.

This is definitely a blue-collar show, but it is funny, poignant, and the dancing was really well choreographed. You knew these people were professionals, yet they made it look like they were not, and I know that is not easy to do. I really enjoyed this show, and I was skeptical about this film being made into a musical, I thought it would ruin it. As it was, I walked out of Fisher humming a tune or two, and glad I had taken in the show.

It is understood that most of these men are former steel workers, so the choice of the abandoned factories as a practice facility is certainly not accidental: the filmmakers clearly meant for this to be both symbolic and comical. The "Steel Strippers" find work once again in the steel refineries; since there is no longer any steel, they work with what little they have available to them -- their

I thought most of the music was easy to listen to, but I would have liked a more modern or hip approach to some of the music. At least some of these guys seemed like guys who would listen to modern music, like hip-hop, and I would have liked to have seen more variety in the music, making it relate more to a younger, hipper audience. I did think the

Second, this focuses benefits on people who need it the most, the ones who are least likely to have other types of retirement plans." says an analyst at the Heritage Foundation, David John (Lambro, 2005). Leading Change Positive Change at the Library One of the most profound change efforts I have been a part of took place shortly after I completed my undergraduate degree. My town's local library was undergoing severe budget cuts due to some decidedly impecunious actions on the part of civic leaders, who essentially squandered away my town's budget (for their personal gain) so badly that many of its programs were being cut due

Physical Comedy on Film Sophisticated, Funny and Physical: The Romances of Astaire and Rogers Physical comedy brings to mind Moe, Larry and Curly bopping each other over the head.
