Future Archaelogist So far we have always thought of the turn of the second millennium as being an age of machinery that transformed people into cold, emotionless creatures. The remaining of this period show clear signs of over-industrialization at a very fast level, even from the beginning of the 19th century that started a fast developing process of isolation for human beings, resulting in all the wars and conflicts that characterized the next century almost to the very end.
There is no doubt that the introduction of massive technology into the homes and personal lives of citizens, that perhaps were not yet ready to receive them, influenced a great deal, -not necessarily for the better, the way they conceived the world. Especially since this modernizing wave set apart great differences between the international relations. It has been said that humans gradually lost any concept of family or social relationships as their new life demanded more and more attention on work.
Many historians have devoted their lives to understand how, after so many centuries of social life, humans decided to hide within their homes, locked up with their new mechanical and electrical devices and devote their lives to exploring the solitary side of existence. The records we have had for many years refer strictly to the isolation experienced by the inhabitants of the western world.
Devices such as televisions, videos and computers that distracted their attention from their families, focusing it on the monitor, kept them too busy in a virtual world and slowly terminated the practice of meeting with other people and sharing live company. It is an interesting phenomena the fact that, as the world population grew to an incredible number, people preferred the company of machines. Perhaps, due to the fact that personal territory became so invaded by crowded society, privacy and loneliness became something rare, and therefore sought as precious.
Or it is also possible that, with the increasing competition between individuals, their company became less agreeable as the hostilities grew. In a world where the population exceeded, the conflict for territory became inevitable and people decided to set their space and not allow anyone inside it.
As we all know, even friends were kept at distance, since people preferred to have virtual chats, each one locked inside their room or other personal space where third parties were hardly ever invited, and communicate through their computers, instead of meeting in person, for a real conversation. They developed clever ways of communication that avoided face-to-face encounters. History books tell a lot about the devastating effects that the wars of the 20th century had over people's mentalities and drove them to lose communication with each other.
However, recent discoveries suggest that the 21st century people may not have been as completely unfeeling and misanthropic as we have believed them to be. There had been a few surviving copies of films made during this period, that represent crowds gathered at local celebrations and displaying very happy attitudes. According to recent studies they represent different celebrations such as weddings, birthdays or graduations. Those fictions were made during the dark post-war period as an expression for the abandoned enjoyment that humanity had lost through the years.
It was commonly believed that they used this kind of amusement to forget their lonely condition and take refuge in the fantasy world, as they had used theater and literature many years before the invention of film making. As we all know film making was the number one key to imagination, enjoyment and relaxation for many decades. Moving films were very popular from the beginning of the 20th century and lasted for a long period as the most accepted entertainment.
The films found from that period tend to represent stories about simple people with endless pursuit for happiness and emotional stability, and they portray merry events where persons can be seen sharing moments of joy. However new theories have stated that some of the films found in recent excavations, that have miraculously survived the chemical decomposition that has destroyed most of the data available from that period, may not have been produced at professional studios.
If those theories are correct it would mean that they were created as home movies in real local reunions. This would bring a new twist to the image that we have had so far about the after World War period. The assumption that the 21st century was a dark and depressive era where nobody ever laughed or socialized may be challenged by the discoveries that some of those images were actually taken from real people and illustrate actual moments from every day life.
The first revelation from those films is that mass groups were still on use during that time, as.
