Nursing, Where are We Headed?

The future of nursing over the next 10-20 years is ready for some serious change. This change will likely be influenced by factors like technological advancements, globalization of healthcare, demographic shifts, and changing healthcare delivery models. The role of nursing is expected to expand and diversify, so that nurses can incorporate a broader scope of practice that encompasses public health, policy-making, education, and leadership roles. This change comes in response to the growing needs of an aging population, the global expansion of healthcare services, and the continuous aim to improve healthcare quality and accessibility while managing costs.

Nurses are expected to take on more comprehensive roles, functioning to the full extent of their licensure and training. Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs), such as nurse practitioners, will likely play a greater role in primary care by offering services from preventive healthcare to managing chronic conditions, and thus address the physician shortage. Specialization in technology and informatics will become more prevalent, with nurses playing important roles in the implementation and management of healthcare IT systems, telehealth services, and data analytics to improve patient care and overall health outcomes (Tiase & Carroll, 2022). Global health and telemedicine will see an increased involvement of nurses in cross-border healthcare delivery, thus contributing to the globalization of healthcare (Glass et al., 2022). Nurses will participate in international health policy development, global health education, and the provision of telehealth services, and thus be able to make healthcare more accessible worldwide. Leadership and policy-making roles will become more common for nurses, as they contribute to shaping health policy, improving healthcare delivery systems, and advocating for patient rights and access to care (Disch, 2020). Focus on preventive care and wellness will see nurses leading community health initiatives, health education programs, and preventive care measures to address public health challenges and reduce the burden on healthcare systems.

I see myself fitting into this environment by understanding my areas of interest, realizing the need for continuous learning, and being flexible enough to be able to adapt when change arrives. For example, I do see myself gaining expertise in a specialty area of nursing or advancing my education to become an APRN, which could position me at the forefront of primary care. I can also see myself embracing technology and acquiring skills in healthcare informatics, which would help me to contribute on the frontlines of the digital transformation of healthcare.

I also see myself being able to approach the field on the level of global health initiatives. I am interested in the role that telehealth can play in global health, and I think this could align with the move towards globalization of healthcare services.

Ultimately, I would also love to be able to take on more of a leadership role in healthcare. I would even like to be a participant in policy development. I think that with enough experience and education, I could contribute to the field in a very positive and impactful way that helps patients around the world.
