Garden Eden
The sound of the waves crashing on the shore woke Catherine from a dream, and she let out a gasp. She could see in the predawn periwinkle that the pile of sheet beside her did not contain David, and she felt his absence and reached between her legs for solace. Aroused, Catherine quickly got out of bed, wearing nothing, and went into the bathroom. She then heard the door open, and two voices giggling, one female and the other belonging to David.
In her panic, Catherine tripped and let out a yelp. The bathroom door swung open, revealing David and "Where is she?" Catherine asked anxiously, looking around the room, seeing the curtains blowing in the wind and wondering if Marita had somehow slipped out as if not wanting to be seen, as if not wanting her.
"Who?" David asked, his eyes big and upon her and genuinely curious as to what she meant.
"But I heard her David, you can't lie."
"Why would I lie?" David put his hand on Catherine's shoulder, but she flinched. Their eyes locked together only solidified the pain lingering, growing, festering. Catherine pushed past him and collapsed on the bed.
"I heard you, I heard her, I heard laughing."
"If we were together, I would have brought her. It's something I've been intending to talk about,...
David, too proud to take heed or to submit to her games, stood and walked to the window. The curtain smashed into his face, and he turned to Catherine and saw her vulnerability sprawled on the bed, and came to her softly.
"She loves you, Catherine. She loves me. Why not?"
"Because, you can't bear it. I can't bear it. She is the only one who can. We're not capable, David! We're weak, we're helpless, we're prisoners, we can never be like her, or liberate our souls from their own shackles."
"What's happening to us?" David asked, wanting an answer, not to the wind.
Catherine said nothing, but she turned her head and stared at the window, averting David's eyes.
"Did you write today?" she broke the silence by changing the subject, for lingering in the darkness proved dangerous.
"Of course. I have more ideas. I want to share them. I think they are breakthroughs, but I'm not sure. I…"
"I'm not happy anymore, David. I don't know…What should I do?"
