Interview with Citizens Crime Commission on raising New York's age of criminal responsibility
Informational Interview This is informational interview aimed at encouraging one to gather more information about crime prevention. It is an opportunity to interview a person associated with a crime prevention program associated with serving juveniles or a person in law enforcement and ask about their crime prevention efforts. Step 1: Select a person to interview (Mr.Richard Aborn, the president of the Citizens Crime Commission of New York City ) For this assignment, you are required to interview one person that either works in a crime prevention program for juveniles or in law enforcement. Before choosing the actual individual you would like to interview, decide what you want to get out of the interview. Some questions you could ask are as follows: What are the program goals and objectives? Who are the individuals they serve? What are successes they have had within the program? How is the program funded? These are all questions to consider, plus what you want to gain from the interview. Search the internet and look for local crime prevention programs. You should conduct research of the program and individual you want to interview. Use your research to support your choice and to develop interview questions. Contact the program/individual and explain that you want to conduct an informational interview for your class assignment and then schedule the interview. Select more than one individual to interview in case your first choice is not available.

¶ … gathering of information on crime prevention initiatives is critical in the quest for a better equipped and evidence-based crime prevention programs (UNODC,2010).In this paper, we present the outcome of an interview which was conducted with Mr. Richard Aborn, the president of the Citizens Crime Commission of New York City, an independent non-profit organization which is nonpartisan and is focused on criminal justice as well as public safety policy reform. A review of their view on the Juvenile justice system is presented below.
Which program have you initiated towards the larger juvenile justice system?
We have started a program aimed at pressurizing the federal government to raise the age of legal responsibility from 16 to 18 years.
What are the program goals and objectives?
The main goal of the program is to prevent underage executions and sentencing. This is because juveniles are supposed to be punished as juveniles and not as adults. The objectives are to come up with a better alternative to the harsh punishments that is usually meted against our Children and also to protect the rights of these children to safe and fair punishment.
Who are the individuals they serve?
The program is meant at serving the children of New York, the parents as well as the greater New York Society.
Why is the age that defines criminal responsibility significant?
The age of criminal responsibility that defines the adult and juvenile justice system is important due to the different approaches that the criminal justice systems assume-rehabilitative vs. punitive. As Judge Lipmann ones noted in his speech before the NY Crime commission, there should be a difference between the two systems as there can "be the difference between a gainfully employed productive citizen and an unemployed, welfare-dependent person who gets caught in the revolving door of the criminal justice system" (NYCoutrs,2011). In order to align the NY juvenile justice policy with the country's bets practices as well as improve te future of our children, we recommend that the age of legal responsibility be raised to eighteen years for crimes that are deemed nonviolent and less serious.
Our organization is working closely with the New York Center for Juvenile Justice together with an informal network of concerned shareholders in coming up with a comprehensive analysis of the blueprint and policy for reform purposes. The raising of the age of legal/criminal responsibility will no doubt be a challenge but our collaboration will make it a possible task.
How is the program funded?
The program is funded by donor and Federal government as part of New York state's Youth agenda.
