General Electric has an extensive leadership program that prepares new college graduates for leadership roles in the company. It is one of the most well respected leadership training programs because it creates excellent leaders ready to take on management roles throughout GE's many different divisions. GE's Leadership Program is successful for several compelling reasons. It is geared to "global management," because GE is a global company, and doing business in different countries and cultures can be very different and challenging. Leaders inspire others to do their best and achieve the company's goals, while managers simply manage those around them. There is a huge difference between the two methods of training, and GE seems to recognize this in their training. They turn ordinary or extraordinary people into great leaders, and that spreads throughout the company, creating a better working environment and more possibilities for excellence.
Another reason GE's management programs work is because they are ongoing and often lengthy. They do not consist of a few weeks of intense training, they often last for several years, and go through many different phases of instruction. These programs are geared to long-term results, rather than short-term intensity, and they give the participants time to put their training to use and move from location to location.
