Meta-Analyses

The selected study (Dalenerolle et al., 2021) sought to determine whether race influenced the risk of gestational diabetes and related mental health disorders among ethnic minorities. The findings showed a sequelae of gestational diabetes with mental health disorders among minority ethnic groups, supporting the hypothesis that Asians, blacks, and other ethnic minorities are disproportionately affected (Dalenerolle et al., 2021).

Dekkers (2018) defines a meta-analysis as a formal, quantitative study design in which one combines related studies that answer the same research question into one design and uses statistical analyses to draw conclusions from the design. The selected study exhibits several features that make it a meta-analysis. First, the authors use standard eligibility criteria to integrate 14 eligible studies into one data set that they analyze using statistical processes to reach their finding. Eligible studies are non-randomized or randomized controlled trials (RCT) published between November 1995 and November 2020 and analysing both psychiatric comorbidities and mental health syndromes (Dalenerolle et al., 2021). The researchers use sensitivity analysis, subgroup analysis, and random effects to calculate 95 percent confidence intervals and odds ratio to establish prevalence (Dalenerolle et al., 2021).

Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria

The study clearly states its inclusion and exclusion criteria. The inclusion criteria dictated that studies have a mental health outcome in addition to gestational diabetes. Further eligible studies were required to specify a BAME (Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic) group and be published in English (Dalenerolle et al., 2021). Studies were excluded if they lacked a mental health outcome, were unpublished or published in languages other than English, lacked a BAME (black, Asian, and minority ethnic) group specification, and if the authors referred to their BAME group as non-white. The selection procedure began with a database search that yielded 20,040 studies. Elimination of duplicates left 5,442 studies, which were exposed to screening, from which a further 5,256 were excluded, leaving 186 that were assessed for eligibility. Of these, the researchers excluded 140 studies for failing to meet the inclusion criteria. For instance, 70 studies were excluded because they lacked a mental health outcome, 22 lacked the gestational diabetes outcome, while 19 did not have a BAME group specified. 2 studies were eliminated because they had a BAME group but referred to it as non-white, 3 because they were unpublished, and 3 because they were not written in English. The elimination of the 140 left 46 studies that were included in the systematic analysis.

I agree with the researcher’s screening approach that uses a multifactor exclusion method to ensure that only relevant articles are included in the analysis. The inclusion/exclusion criteria helped to prevent skewness in the data set and increased the accuracy and generalizability of findings (Patino & Ferreira, 2018).

The Findings

The study findings showed that race was a significant influencer of gestational diabetes and related mental health disorders. The findings supported the hypothesis that BAME group members were disproportionately affected by gestational diabetes and related mental health disorders. I agree with this finding because multiple studies have already shown that blacks, Hispanics and other ethnic minorities have higher risks of developing diabetes (Hill-Briggs, 2021). According to Hill-Briggs (2021), this is due to socioeconomic factors that place minorities at a disadvantage through poor nutrition and lack of proper exercise-related infrastructure in their neighborhoods.
