Gifted Hands

Dr. Ben Carson's Gifted Hands is a book about miracles in more ways than one. An autobiography, the book is a living testimonial about how faith and determination can overcome the most difficult of circumstances. This makes the book a must read for all those who feel helpless and trapped by either their circumstances or society's injustices. Indeed, Ben Carson's story both inspires and shows the way. Born an inner-city, black kid, who suffers from low self-esteem, Carson describes his journey from being regarded as a "dummy," to going on to win a scholarship at Yale University and then attending the University of Michigan Medical School. In fact, Carson's life story truly feels as if one is witnessing a miracle of transformation, as today he is the Director of Pediatric neurosurgery at John Hopkins University Hospital and a world renowned neurosurgeon

In his autobiography, Carson describes in vivid detail how faith helped him at virtually every step of his chosen life path. He credits his mother a great deal for instilling that faith in her children and showing them the way to leading productive, satisfying lives. Though Sonya Carson was illiterate, she believed that education and knowledge was the route out of a life of poverty. She repeatedly told her boys that they weren't born to be failures; insisted that they read at least two books a week; study hard; have faith in themselves; and seek guidance from God. Today, Carson still believes that his "gifted hands" receive guidance from God. In fact, in his narrative, he describes praying to God for help and guidance at several difficult points in his life, ranging from a dreaded Chemistry test at Yale to a difficult surgery to separate conjoined twins. Indeed, reading about a top neurosurgeon, acclaimed for several medical breakthroughs and near miracles, crediting his success to faith, determination, and hard work is not only inspiring but a humbling experience!
