Globalization

In the past, strategic planning for corporations was relatively easy (Newland, 1999). They had to create and address plans that worked for their local community, and that was about it. If they went national at some point they had to be aware of the differences across the country, but most of those were pretty minor. Now, with the Internet and globalization, there is so much more taking place. People have to be much more aware of how others look at the world and what they have in mind when it comes to what they need and want. Cross-cultural boundaries can be difficult to address and understand, and there are many things that work well in the United States that would not work well in other countries (Newland, 1999).

It can also be harder to trust people because there is a lot of miscommunication that can take place over the Internet (Jurkiewicz, 2000). It is not the same as talking to someone in person or over the phone, and that has changed the dynamics of the corporate world and the consumer world, as well. Those who work in strategic planning for companies need to pay close attention to what other cultures like and they need to remain very neutral and inoffensive to the largest group of individuals if they want to continue to sell their goods and services in a global economy.

Question 2: Between the two models, there are some similarities, but many differences. The Strategic Management Model is less complex overall, as it begins with environmental scanning instead of including several steps before that like the Strategic Decision-Making Process does. However, one would have to think that the steps that are not actually shown would still have to have been addressed in order for a company to be secure in moving ahead. After both models are examined, though, it is seen that they are very similar. They do not clash with one another and actually complement each other very well. Both of them could be very valuable to any company that is looking for a way to make better decisions because they have the same ideas and goals in mind.
