Globalization Position on Globalization Globalization is a trend towards a more integrated global economic system that is driven by the reduction of trade and investment barriers by technology and other factors. Is important to note that globalization is not exactly a new phenomenon. As soon as the transportation technology developed to a sufficient level to move around various goods then international trade quickly emerged. The first ships that traded spices and various goods could be considered forms of emerging globalization.

However, today's level of globalization is on an entirely different scale than previous trade arrangements. Much of the globalization trend is driven by the fact that many organizations operate internationally and supply chains have become sophisticated, complex, and spans the entire globe. When multi-national companies are able to access to foreign resources and labor then they can often achieve much higher profit margins.

Furthermore, in many cases it can also help to develop the local economy by providing jobs to individuals who were not likely to find one without the injection of foreign investment. However, in many cases the results of the foreign investments often do not improve the quality of life for the local residents. Much of this must be determined on a case by case basis of whether the MNC is actually improving the welfare of their foreign employees.

Apple faces unique challenges with one of the primary vendors known as Foxconn in China in which the working conditions are so difficult that the company has actually installed a suicide prevention netting around their buildings to keep employees from jumping to their deaths. In regards to the economic impacts that have developed as a result of globalization, the results have widely been mixed as well.

There are cases in which many companies have used globalization to advance their economies, lift millions out of poverty, and create a thriving middle class such as in India and China. In these countries the quality of life has been significantly increased for millions of citizens. However, these results cannot be expected in all cases. Critics have argued that the effects of globalization has also driven people into extreme poverty and subjected them to harsh and inhumane working conditions.

For example, if an unethical company comes in and buys all the land so that local can no longer farm, then they effectively have no other options than a harsh life as a factory worker. In some case being a subsistence farmer can produce a higher quality of life than one that is experienced in a factory twelve hours a day seven days a week. In my opinion, the.
