¶ … goal of mine to attend Howard University. The multicultural acknowledgement and acceptance that is such a strong and vital part of the school's history makes it stand out from the myriad choices of institutions. It is my sincere hope that I will be able to add to the university's legacy by taking part in the next generation of American policy making, advancing the ideas of equality and opportunity for all despite the often perceived and still too-real barriers of race, ethnicity, and linguistic differences that many minorities face on a daily basis. Being Hispanic, I know first-hand just what inequality feels like, and I believe that I can help change other people's minds -- which is the only step necessary in changing the world -- if I work hard enough at it and am given the right opportunities.
Going into politics has always been my goal, not because I seek power for myself, but because I see too many people who have been told that they are powerless, and that need someone to speak for them. I do not know whether I would actually like to run for office, but simply being a part of the decision making process would put me into a position to cause some real change. As a Hispanic-American, I know what it is like to feel like my own world is separate from that which the majority of others enjoy. It is my goal to eliminate that feeling for future generations. I believe that my admittance to Howard University will be an immense help in achieving that goal, and that in turn Howard University and its legacy will benefit from my success.
No partnership can ever exist for long without the mutual beneficence of both parties. I expect to get a lot out of Howard University, and in a very real way this will also be my biggest contribution to Howard's legacy. There are few if any things more noble than the unbiased and open education of an eager mind. I possess the latter, and am of the firm belief and hope that I can receive the former at your institution. When I carry that away with me at the end of my time in Howard's halls, I will be bringing it out into the world where it cannot help but let itself be seen in the pride and care with which I handle my work and the world around me. I am willing to work very hard and sacrifice whatever necessary to receive the best education possible. If I am granted the privilege of obtaining that education at Howard University, that hard work will be a direct contribution to the school's legacy. I know of no clearer way to express my contribution than this: I am honest, fair-minded, and determined, and I do not believe these qualities can be anything but an asset wherever they go. I hope that they (and I) are allowed to go to Howard University, and I thank you for your consideration.
