Governor's Summer Internship

Discuss your interests in being a governor's summer intern. How does this program compliment your personal goals and/or professional aspirations? (Please no more than 300 words)

Having come of age during a time of widespread economic instability, myself and the generation of young adults who are my peers have been forced to recalibrate our collective expectations. The pursuit of personal profit, while en vogue during prior decades, has been revealed to be a ruse as the Great Recession rolls onward, and this revelation has compelled the youth of today to turn increasingly toward the realm of public service. With our nation suffering through a prolonged social malaise, it has become quite evident that the remedy can only be found through a willing return to our fundamental ideals. For these reasons I have decided to devote my education, my skills and my passion to serving the community, and I can think of no better foundation on which to build a career in public service than the Governor's Summer Internship Program.

As a student currently enrolled at insert name of your university here I have dedicated the bulk of my academic study to improving my capabilities as a public servant. A carefully constructed course load, civically minded extracurricular activities and active participation in university politics have all been steps toward my eventual goal of pursuing a J.D./M.B.A. program in business administration and corporate law. I truly believe that securing a position as an intern to Governor O'Malley this summer will confirm my commitment to public service by allowing me firsthand access to the inner workings of our state government. By learning from the best and brightest citizens of our fair state, I can sharpen my focus and direct my energies to improving the lives of Marylanders, and indeed of all Americans, by serving them faithfully in the public sector.

Select a problem of interest to you impacting the state of Maryland within one of the three policy areas which are (transportation, public safety and economic development). Describe in 300 words or less what steps you would take to address and tackle this issue.

As the nation slowly recovers from a recession born from federal mismanagement of the economy, I believe the uniqueness of America's system of governance, which grants states the right to establish individual policy, will be our greatest asset. Decisive action taken on the local level to adapt during these uncertain times will undoubtedly shepherd certain states through the recession better than others, and Maryland is certainly poised to rebound more quickly than her neighbors. This encouraging development was made possible after bold initiatives by our state government were made to increase exports to emerging economies such as India and China, and I feel strongly that these programs should be continued and expanded upon. While other states suffer from a lack of manufacturing infrastructure after decades of merciless outsourcing, Maryland now boasts trade export levels which rival those from the pre-recession era.
