¶ … Grade Lesson Plan
Common Core Standards
In the state of North Carolina there are different standards in mathematics that must be met for all first grade students to include:
To develop strategies that will enhance the individual's ability to add and subtract whole numbers.
To successfully perform addition up to denominations of 100 and conduct subtraction in multiples of 10.
Understanding the various concepts of measurement.
The ability to recognize and compose planes or solid figures.
These areas are providing a basic foundation that will help prepare students for the challenges they will face in the future. ("Common Core State Standards," 2012)
Learning Objective
The learning objectives are to teach students these basic concepts. Then, they must be able to recall and use them consistently. This will provide everybody with an understanding of key mathematical ideas. (Pitler, 2007)
Materials & Resources
To assist everyone's comprehension of these concepts, a traditional lecture format will be used. This will be followed up with a period where the student will practice key ideas on paper and utilizing a computer. To provide further understand, various e-learning solutions (such as: tutorials and mathematical games) can reinforce them. This will reach out to all individuals by: providing repeated exposure, different ways of presenting the material and repetition. (Pitler, 2007)
Introduction: Student Connections & Background Knowledge
The best way to connect with the student and build background knowledge is to use the traditional lecture format. Then, have everyone spend time working on them through written methods. Those students who are having trouble will be provided with additional assistance using web tutorials and special programs. This will build everybody's basic knowledge of understanding these concepts. (Pitler, 2007)
Instruction / Lesson
The instruction and lesson will focus on introducing these ideas as well as having the individuals practicing them on their own. Once everyone has a basic comprehension, is the point that the class will work with computer games and programs. This will enhance their knowledge and improve the individual's ability to use these ideas in the future. (Pitler, 2007)
Guided Practice
The guided practice is to ensure that all students master these concepts. This will make certain that everyone has a foundation of knowledge in these areas. Once the entire class is at the same point, is when they will use technology to provide greater repetition and practice. (Pitler, 2007)
Independent Practice
The independent practices are offering additional support to students that are most challenged. Those who are having difficulty will use web tutorials and e-learning solutions to provide further instruction / preparation. This will prevent them from falling behind and it is reaching out to the individual using other styles of learning. (Pitler, 2007)
Closure
To close the session, the students will repeat to educators how these concepts work. This will be accomplished by having them take a practice quiz. Inside there will be an emphasis on the actual ideas. This will provide an indication as to the overall levels of understanding and what weaknesses must be addressed. (Pitler, 2007)
