There has been much controversy regarding the topic of "going green" in the recent years, as the general public is yet to understand the benefits of a less polluted environment. Although many people disregard public transportation when regarding green solutions, abandoning personal means of travelling in favor of choosing public transportation is actually extremely important in assisting the environment. Public transport is certainly not a solution for short trips or for when one is not in a hurry, but it is actually one of the only environmental solutions for all other types of journeys.

Public transportation has experienced a significant decline in the recent decades, this most probably being a result of the fact that people started to earn larger incomes. The masses perceived cars as an extension of their home, as they become more accessorized and "easier and more comfortable to drive" (Simpson 3). Some of the little advantages that public transport has over cars are related to reading and other minor activities. These actions are however only accessible in longer trips.

As a means to combat the success of cars, public transport companies invested large amounts of money in improving public transportation. Environmental improvements have represented the main focus of public transport authorities in the recent years, given that pollution has grown to be one of the most debated contemporary topics. Electric railways are among the most appreciated means of public transportation, as electric traction does not pollute on-street and is thus one of the best solutions to crowded areas where people are unable to function properly if they come across vehicles that emit toxic substances. Some of the most renowned locations from around the world are recognized for the fact that they either impose large taxes on cars or for only allowing access to public means of transport. It would thus be more practical to choose public transportation in favor of cars. Cities that got actively engaged in supporting public transportation are responsible for keeping levels of pollution at a low (Simpson 44).

Many are well-aware of the advantages of going green through using public transportation but nonetheless express hesitation when it comes to leaving their cars behind. People have to realize that a cleaner future can only exist through cutting off some of the main pollutant emitters-cars. In spite of the fact that the contemporary society has most people unable to effectively divide their time so as for them to be able to give up cars, conditions are gradually progressing, making it easier for people to travel by using public transportation. In the overall chaos that they go through every day, some people are virtually unable to see that a large part of their finances go into their cars. Public transport provides individuals with the cheaper and less pollutant alternative. Also, public transportation is renowned for the fact that accidents happen much less often than they happen when a car is involved, meaning that traveling by public transport makes things safer. Although most prefer to believe that the "other activities" part that consists a benefit as a result of using public transport is not applied in every situation, conditions are actually different. People that use public transportation can use the time they have for the trip more effectively.
