UMUC Haircuts
There are many opportunities being missed by UMUC Haircuts that will ultimately having an IT assisted solution as the business continues to evolve. One of the main modules that the company is not currently taking advantage of is definitely the customer relationship management (CRM) opportunities. IT-based CRM programs can help organizations focus on a narrow target market and create a customer profile to make sure the customers' needs are being met at all times as well as have a mechanism for customer feedback and satisfaction ratings. Another possibility might be to automate the scheduling system so that clients are automatically reminded when next haircut is scheduled and send them automated messages through phone, email, or text.
Furthermore, many customers can be picky about their hair and demand a high quality of service. One possible solution would be to create a profile for customers with pictures of the haircuts and styles that they like. For example, a woman might have to try to explain to her stylist in words how she really liked her last haircut. However, if the business took advantage of pictures in the CRM system then they could take pictures as records, offering a service that actually took before and after pictures of people's haircuts might provide in innovative way to attract customers.
This would provide an entire new level of communication between the service and the service provider made possible through effective technological implementation. If the client did not like the service the last time they had their hair done, then they could point at the picture and show exactly the parts that they were not satisfied with so that the service could improve. Therefore, in terms of customer satisfaction, I think it makes the most sense to start with a CRM platform before any other if the business has to choose to start with one first.
Week 7
I believe the scope would be the most important of the three items in the triple constraint; although the other two are quite important as well. However, the scope will determine how the business will run in the future. This will require a great deal of deciding what is most important to the business. The company could choose to implement a CRM module as decided in week 6 or go ahead and implement a full ERP system. Therefore, by designing the scope the company will have to map out its current and future business processes. This exercise should make the business operate more effectively in the future while driving up both revenues and customer satisfaction.
Week 8
The small business could certainly benefit from outsourcing some of the non-critical business functions to third parties. However, the small business should most likely outsource to someone locally as opposed to internationally. One disadvantage to outsourcing internationally in developing markets is that these countries often lack the judicial system to protect property rights (Goldberg, 2009). Outsourcing to an international partner would create a level of risk and increase the operational complexity. However, there is no reason that the small business could not outsource the accounting function to a local accountant without much of a problem.
