Morocco: Position statement
Morocco's national policy regarding Internet technology and privacy has been extremely proactive in recent years. In 2010, Morocco created the National Commission for the Protection of Personal Data (NCDP) as "a decisive step towards completing the appropriate framework to consolidate digital confidence in Morocco." In 2009, Morocco passed a ground-breaking law guaranteeing the privacy of citizens online and also mandated that businesses involved in data processing obtain permission from the individuals whose data is being used. Morocco's policy going forward regarding privacy and technology regarding relevant international agreements is intended to convey "the Kingdom's adhesion to the international legal system for the protection personal identity and human rights." Morocco's official state policy is that information technology should not comprise users' "identity, rights, and collective or individual freedoms, nor becoming a means to disclose private data." Morocco believes that privacy rights are extremely important to uphold. Protected privacy rights can ensure that Morocco becomes a vital part of the international business community. The Moroccan premiere has stated: "the protection of personal data…is essential for the development of this sector [IT] which generates jobs" for the future and ensures the success of the nation in the globally-oriented business community.
