Hatha Yoga and Professional Dance

Hatha Yoga is a variety of yoga in which the somatic form of yoga is emphasized. In general yoga functions as a combination of physical movement, breathing, and a meditative spirit which provides a synthesis between the mind, body, and what of the spirit an individual is attuned to. As a form of yoga that focuses on somatic movement therapy, hatha yoga is particularly gentle and incorporates elements of stretching with fundamental breathing principles. As such, it assists with harmonizing both sides of the body and promotes confidence, balance, as well as strength. Hatha is comprised of a meditative component, an awareness of one's breathing, and physical posture.

Due to these fundamental principles of hatha yoga, it is an ideal way for dancers to simultaneously relax and strengthen their bodies. The recuperative aspects of hatha yoga are legion -- in addition to increasing flexibility and strength, it helps foster a stability of emotions which is required for long-term, physical efforts. The strains that dance puts on the muscles and tendons of the body are no small matter. Oftentimes, dancers (whether they are professional or not) engage in repetitive motions which can, if not properly assuaged, wear the body down. Many dancers also perform in fairly stressful situations which can exacerbate the physical effects of this trade. As such, it is not infrequent for dancers to reach various points in their careers in which they lack energy and are physically exhausted.

Nonetheless, Hatha Yoga can ameliorate many of these negative conditions which are a natural part of engaging in repetitive physical exercise. One of its primary benefits for dancers is its development of agility, which assists in maintaining limber, elastic bodies that are not so easily worn out. It also helps to strengthen an individual's muscles and certain bones, such as the spinal cord. One can actually increase his or her stamina by practicing hatha yoga, which can help to prolong the period of activity that an individual's life spans. Hatha yoga also has a re-energizing effect, which can help dancers to extend the life of their professional careers or even personal enjoyment of various types of dance activities. The relaxing effects of this type of yoga are beneficial for both the mind and the body, allowing dancers to focus more while both performing or practicing. The result is than regular practicing of this type of yoga can improve coordination and concentration, so that dancers are able to focus more on their craft while ultimately protecting their bodies.

One of the most beneficial things that people with scoliosis can do is to engage in hatha yoga, because of its helpful influence on certain bones and muscles. Hatha yoga can help to create better posture in virtually anyone who practices it, including those who are afflicted with scoliosis. This particular attribute of this type of yoga is intrinsically related to its propensity for building muscle and strengthening the spinal area. Subsequently, people with scoliosis can assuage any sort of back pain with the proper stretching and breathing exercises that are part of hatha yoga. It can fortify the muscular skeletal area and actually provide a corrective for the types of curves associated with scoliosis: both structural and functional. It helps the former from becoming worse and actually straightens out the latter. Dancers can actually expand their spines when they practice hatha yoga incrementally, which also boosts their flexibility while performing. This type of yoga is also essentially in stretching muscles that might otherwise develop the tendency to become tightened. The comprehensive effect of regular engagement in hatha yoga for those with scoliosis is that they can help to align the symmetry of their bodily structures while significantly augmenting the muscular skeletal area near their spines.
