HcL Production

Hydrochloric acid is a very strong acid and a significant element of the gastric juice that has contributed to increased interest in its impact and consequences. Generally, hydrochloric acid is a colorless, clear acid that is found naturally in gastric acid since it is a highly pungent solution of hydrogen chloride in water. The considerable interest in the production of hydrochloric acid is attributed to the belief that it plays a vital role in the development of various aspects relating to peptic ulcer. However, hydrochloric acid plays a crucial role in gastric secretion with regards to the ability of the body to break down proteins, protect overgrowth of bacteria in the gut, and activation of vital hormones and enzymes.

The production of hydrochloric acid is an issue that has continued to attract significant attention, which has culminated in various studies that examine this issue. Traditionally, HcL production in the stomach has been attributed to gastric mucosa. Once an individual begins eating, his/her body generates hydrochloric acid, which is a strong acid that helps in the digestion process. In this case, hydrochloric acid is produced following the mixture of hydrogen and chloride in the body. The stomach is made of different layers i.e. gastric mucosa, serosa, submucosa, and muscularis externa (Rhoades & Bell, 2013, p.508). The most unique cells in the stomach are parietal cells, which principally secrete hydrochloric acid. Actually, this strong acid is secreted throughout the parietal cell microvillar membrane and flows into the oxyntic gland lumen through the intercellular canaliculi. According to Carlin (2002), increased hydrochloric acid in the stomach elevates systemic pH in order to balance body pH (p.73). One of the most common things regarding HcL production is that when the general body pH becomes acid, the stomach's parietal glands significantly lessen HcL production. In this case, additional hydrogen ions combined with chloride ions are excreted as hydrochloric acid by the kidneys.
