Health Disparities
The Growing Inequalities. During the second half of the twentieth century, a striking redistribution of earnings occurred in America, as the nation shifted from the rising tides of the postwar quarter-century after World War II into the growing inequalities of the millennial quarter-century after 1975. (a) What would you say is the most compelling explanation for this remarkable change in the economic structure of American society? (b) Describe one specific policy intervention that you would recommend as a way to restore a modicum of equity and fairness to the U.S. economy.
The biggest shift that occurred over the last quarter century was the overall amounts of deregulation that was occurring. Part of the reason for this, was because the various social programs and regulations that were in place, were being continually questioned as over regulating. Where, many government bureaucrats were able to limit the activities on a number of different businesses. This would lead to the dismantling of protections that were designed to protect the general public against possible abuses.
To restore equality, requires having the government limit the size of various businesses and place some kind of limitations on pay packages. This is important, because greed has been the basis for a number of different abuses that are occurring. If you can place limitations on how big an entity can become and how much money an individual can make, you are restoring balance to the system. As this will address the root causes of the problem, helping to re establish a modicum of equity.
Describe the relationship among health disparities, disasters and environmental health hazards in the Gulf of Mexico region.
Various natural and manmade disasters can have ripple effects across the Gulf Coast Region. As a single event can start a series of chain reactions that will affect the underlying levels of health. This is because the environment of the region has undergone extensive damages from the event. At which point, this will have an effect on the various levels of health across the entire spectrum. This is important, because it highlights how an interconnected relationship exists between all of the various elements.
What framework can be used to guide the transformation of public and safety net institutions to reposition them to thrive as health care reform is implemented.
Improvements in the way technology is being utilized. This is important, because utilizing technology to deliver various health care solutions will: increase collaboration, improve the underlying amounts of care and it can help to reduce costs. Once this takes place, it means that implementing various changes can be easier.
When a health care professional encounters an Asian patient in their practice, what are at least three characteristics he/she should consider in order to improve communication and cultural competence in delivering services to this patient and tell why those characteristics are important to consider.
Three characteristics that should be considered would include: family, communication and the concept of time. Family matters to Asian patients, as this is their foundation for strength and support. Communication is important, with these patients more focused on body languages and pauses (to signify substance vs. The actual words). Time will be different between the two cultures, as Asian patients will place less of an emphasis on doing something at the time they are suppose to (instead they are focused on general time frames). ("Cultural Values of Asian Patients," 2009)
