Health Promotion
While some health problems and diseases are congenital, health is largely a matter of common sense and lifestyle habits. Therefore, any community health program must include means by which citizens can make healthy lifestyle choices. Choices must be affordable, accessible, and convenient. For example, the community should have free sports facilities that appeal to a wide range of people. For example, skateboard parks should be installed for young people, and shuffleboard facilities for the older population. Basketball courts, tennis courts, and other facilities that encourage free usage would also be helpful. Moreover, people in the community should be encouraged to walk more often, so sidewalks should be maintained and stores should be located within walking distance to people's homes. Bicycle lanes and paths would encourage bicycling over driving. Also, walking and bicycle riding would be encouraged if the neighborhood is kept attractive, by planning more trees and flowers. Increasing the numbers of corner stores would be helpful in limiting the numbers of people who drive several miles just to buy a carton of eggs. These are simple, logical steps to promoting physical activity, which is one of the essential components of health.
