The effects of healthy behavior on the healthcare system

More than half of the money allocated for healthcare is misused. Giving patients defensive medicines or requesting they undertake unnecessary tests increase the amount of money spent in healthcare. There are inappropriate procedures that doctors or physicians request from the patients in order to provide a correct diagnosis Berwick & Hackbarth, 2012.

These procedures lead to the increase of health care costs and they are avoidable. Healthcare administration costs are exorbitant and account for 30% of the total bill given to a patient. The administration costs are included in the patient's final bill, and they have no option but to pay. Hospital administration costs do not add value to the patient's health, but proper running of the hospital is vital. Reducing the costs associated with running a hospital will assist in reducing the funds misuse. Another area where funds are misused is the treatment of avoidable conditions like obesity. Individual behaviors that lead to health problems need early mitigation to prevent them from becoming health issues. Providing the individuals with non-medicinal interventions would assist in reducing the overall wastage of healthcare dollars.
The need for cost containment has led to a decrease in the required number of hospital beds and hospitals available across the United States. The reduction in hospitals is mainly due to a decline of in-patient surgeries Conklin, 2002.

Promoting informal after care services has made many patients to opt for outpatient surgeries, and this has resulted in reduced costs for the patient. This does reduce the cost of healthcare, but it is negatively affecting the hospitals. Cost containment has necessitated and promoted home-based care in order to deliver the same care for the patient. Home-based care reduces the costs incurred as the patient can recuperate at home and not incur the cost of a hospital bed. Having relatives around to provide for the necessary care benefits the patient and overall reduces their healthcare costs. Promotion of prevention initiatives has assisted in cost containment.
