Risks Facing the Facility

At the Great Western Hospital (GWH), a major concern is the high percentage of high-risk pregnancies. More than 40% of all pregnancies at GWH fall into this category, which is higher than the national average (Porter et al., 2013). These high-risk pregnancies result from issues like multiple gestations, diabetes, and other conditions. To help, Dr. Narayan launched a new delivery model tailored for high-risk pregnancies, but the application of model is still in its early stages and acceptance and workability of the model is still uncertain.

Dr. Narayan is also considering expanding the new model to other maternity units across England. However, this could result in resistance as well as logistical challenges, due to the diverse nature of healthcare facilities and their varying ability to adapt to new models of care (Porter et al., 2013).

Another risk is the economic stability of the National Health Service (NHS). Even with its substantial budget, the NHS's financial stability has come under scrutiny, especially with the introduction of a four-year cap on its spending increases. This financial strain is further compounded by the 2011 legislative proposal aiming to fundamentally restructure the NHS. Such a transformation could have direct implications for the operations and funding mechanisms of hospitals, including GWH.

Proper training will further help staff learn and apply the new approach. With a cautious and careful manner, the model can be woven into the hospital's operations.

Economic Stability of the NHS

The economic stability of the NHS is also a concern. The NHS should diversify its funding sources to bolster its financial position. This can be done by optimizing operational costs and looking for potential partnerships with other organizations. If it can find new partnerships and create new revenue streams, it will have a more solid financial footing and thus be able to make sure that its healthcare services are not imperiled.

The Biggest Problem: High-Risk Pregnancies

The biggest problem at the heart of all this is the issue of high-risk pregnancies. Everything else stems from that. The main strategy here should be the establishment of specialized care units. These units would be dedicated to catering to specific high-risk conditions and making sure that patients receive the specialized care they require.

In conjunction with this, regular monitoring should also be part of the plan. Ultrasound technology is vital here and can be used to maintain a close watch on the health of both the mother and the baby. Constant monitoring can help in early detection of potential complications, allowing for timely interventions.

Plus, proactive measures can help reduce risk. For example, making lifestyle changes, implementing comprehensive medical management, offering counseling sessions to expectant mothers, and providing health education—all of this can help reduce the risks associated with their pregnancies.

The hospital staff's expertise should be used to its fullest, too. The hospital should provide regular training sessions and workshops so that staff is updated with the latest advancements and best practices in high-risk pregnancy care. There needs to be a continuous learning environment to drive this strategy and support the response.

Dr. Narayan has certainly adopted a proactive approach to address GWH’s various risks. However, there needs to be some consideration given to the risks involved in addressing the risks identified by Dr. Narayan. For instance, the introduction of a new delivery model for high-risk pregnancies does provide an innovative approach to improving patient care. Ultimately, it is about taking calculated risks, and taking chances based on logic and evidence instead of acting willy-nilly. Dr. Narayan appears to be doing the former rather that latter. That is good, overall. GWH's desire to move towards the new delivery model indicates that there is good enough leadership in place to uphold evidence-based practices. They are willing to take the right risks for the betterment of patient care. For that reason, one can deduce that the organization would likely be receptive to other strategies that align with its mission, so long as they are supported by evidence. The main goal, it should be recalled, is to make sure that there is in place the right care for high-risk pregnancies. If a strategy helps in this case, that would likely be the guiding principle in their decision-making process.
