Hour of Power
Because of various reasons, alcohol abuse is a common thing among young people. They are usually less experienced in life, and, as a result, it is easier for them to fall victims to various harmful substances. The Hour of Power is a game usually performed by a group of young people occasioned by the twenty-year-old birthday of one of them. The event involves each person from the group having to drink a shot of beer every minute for a whole hour. Most of the people playing usually get drunk, and, there is a possibility for some of the players to enter a coma or even to die.
An alarm has been triggered concerning the power hour game, and authorities are looking into the problem in order to find ways of preventing such games from taking place. Some have suggested that the government should lengthen the legal drinking age a few hours after people reach twenty one. Also, a number of bars have been reported to refrain from serving twenty one drinks to customers that reach twenty one.
All in all, such methods are certainly ineffective, since everyone knows that it is not hard for someone to get their hands on large amounts of alcohol if they really want to. A true and effective method of combating games like the hour of power would be for the media to present the possible consequences of the game exactly as they are. It is clear that young people are not afraid of abusing alcohol. However, after witnessing the effects that an apparently simple game has on the ones that play it and on their families, people would definitely think twice before joining a power hour game. Another method which would most probably be effective would be for young people to be taught that most of the effects that they believe alcohol to have do not exist. People should learn that alcohol does not make you sociable and does not make you more attractive for the opposite sex.
