Transfer Admission Statement:
Few things truly worth achieving in life are gained without hardship. This is a reality which I have ascertained over years of trial, setback and success, and which occurs to me now as I seek a transfer to your university. Indeed, as I have pursued my personal development through a series of disciplines and challenges, I have been shaped as much by my failures as by my achievements. As the remarkably accomplished Thomas Edison once denoted, 'mistakes breed success.' This is a proverb that has always been of great value to me, particularly in the early years of my education, where I struggled to find myself academically.
Certainly, this was not for lack of trying, as I worked my way through one activity after another with only modest success. I tried my hand, in athletics (golf), music (soprano saxophone), culinary arts (cooking) and performance arts (acting). As with my general studies, I could not establish a personal connection to any one of these learning areas. It may be the case that I lacked the focus or motivation to truly study, practice and refine my skills in any one area. This lack of direction also caused me to be rejected from Korean university a number of times. It was extremely discouraging but not without its explanation. I had not yet come to appreciate the implications of my own efforts and their relationship to my success. Then, with the events of a single harrowing day, everything changed.
I was in a very serious car accident which saw me spend considerable time undergoing hospitalization and recovery. It was during this difficult convalescence that I came to appreciate the many aspects of life which I had come to take for granted. I began to understand life as precious and my time as limited, and with that, I reflected on my approach to my studies and my future. I parlayed the regrets I had over several wasted years of opportunity into a fresh start. Today, in my profession, my education and my recreational pursuits, I am a picture of diligence and determination. As I have begun to succeed in many of the same areas where I had once found achievement so difficult, I began to note the connection between my enthusiasm for that which I was doing and the positive results yielded there from.
I would be able to channel this newfound positive attitude into the discovery of an academic area that resonates with me. Since my accident, I have taken up a new and refreshing direction, learning the beautiful natural science that is economics. It is here within that a direction has emerged. This combined with the positive experiences which I have gained working both at Wal-Mart Korea and at the Lotte Department Store to suggest a clear and attainable path for me. My working experiences have opened up a bevy of personal strengths previously unknown to me. I take great pleasure working with others, helping people and accommodating interpersonal interaction. This is true to the extent that I have used my diplomacy and communication skills to help bridge conflicts, bring about compromise and generally promote a more positive and enjoyable atmosphere at work.
