People Left on This Planet

¶ … people left on this planet that have not heard of Facebook. Many will agree when I say that Facebook has become, if not the greatest, then definitely one of the greatest communication tools. It helps us stay connected not only to the friends and family that are far away, but also to the people that live next door to us. In the fast pace of life, where no-body seems to have the time for a real phone conversation anymore, a quick Facebook status up-dates don't seem such a bad idea. In a matter of seconds, Facebook can provide us with such in-formation as whose' exams are coming up, where they go out to eat or as intimate details as who just had a baby or got married.

As much as there are fun facts about Facebook, there are just as many negative aspects about it. Many people take the use of this website to the extremes. People feel very comfortable communicating with the machine that doesn't talk back and quickly start crossing borders and begin to infringe on one's privacy and at times even start bullying. Many people want to believe that somehow Facebook is their true community. However, what individuals express in a virtual world, they may never dare to repeat it in the real world.

In virtual community people quickly tend to forget the etiquette of respect and privacy. Tyler Clementi was talented and a spirited young man. It was suppose to be one of the most exciting times of his life, he was accepted to Rutgers University and was looking forward to the upcoming year. Tragically, life was cut short by Tyler's roommate Ravi after his invasion of privacy. "Clementi leaped to his death from the George Washington Bridge after a live video feed of his intimate encounter with another young man was viewed over the internet without his knowledge." We have reached a critical point in our society where interpretation is needed from not only the parents, but also from our government officials. There are too many young adults that are choosing to end their life because of cyber bulling. Many people seem not to understand the harm the Internet can do, therefore, we must increase in educating our generations about the modern world of internet.
