Traits Strike Me Immediately as a Reader

¶ … traits strike me immediately as a reader of this piece: the vocabulary and the sentence structure. There is a great fluidity of organization and thought to this essay. The vocabulary is chosen thoughtfully and is apt as well as appropriate. There is an immediate sense of flow and rhythm to the writing and to the ideas. It is evident that the author is considering the poets and the poetry with depth and gravity.

The analysis of the poetry is excellent. It is clear and concise. The ideas and observations move from one to another with logic and ease of transition. The flow of ideas is nearly seamless. The author should take notice of the misuse and misplacement of commas throughout the work. This is the strongest criticism of the essay: commas. Otherwise, the essay is quite superlative.

The author of this essay also does a fine job of interjecting quotations from the poems as part of the analysis. The use of quotation is effective; it is present enough to be remembered, but it is not used so much that it seems to be a crutch or a substitute for actual writing. There is good description of the quotation and enough analysis of the quotation. The author additionally succeeds in relating individual points of the essay to the overall theme repeatedly, yet not redundantly.

The author refers to specific parts of speech, verb forms, and tenses as part of the analysis and comparison. This was a welcomed and enjoyable aspect. Poetry is very much a linguistic art form. Language and plays on language are extremely relevant characteristics of good poetry. The author pays close attention to the use of particular kinds of words and draws connections to the poet and/or the theme of the poem. This close eye to language comes in very handy and can be very fruitful in such endeavors as poetic analysis. Poets choose their words with great intention, so for the analysis to pay the kind of attention to language that a poet would is outstanding and productive. This strategy often yields revealing and profound insights into the poem and the poet. This also can be extremely useful, as a lot of great poetry is dense and can be quite difficult to make complete sense of.
