Much of the nature of the widespread use of alcohol at this time is cited by the author, who also notes the high rate of alcoholism among slaves, the way women drank in private so their family would not know, the relationship of alcohol use to social position, and so on. Rorabugh writes well, as does Johnson, and both books are readable and make coherent arguments that are fully referenced and well reasoned. Both books deal with a segment of the larger American social order, and both books contain controversial arguments about the degree to which the segments of society discussed reflect truths about American society as a whole or only describe a unique and isolated segment. The authors of both books do extensive research and provide the necessary information so the reader could redo that research on his or her own as well. That approach suggests that the authors have nothing to hide and that they fully expect anone who looks at their research to confirm it if they do follow up. It is presumed that if any reader does follow up on this information, the vies in these books would indeed be confirmed by a neutral researcher.
